Morcheeba Top 5 Music Obsessions

Top 5 Music Obsessions featuring Morcheeba

Today’s Top 5 Music Obsessions came together quickly this morning, one to the other, sounding just as perfect together, as each track sounds on its own. These five songs I keep listening to, hitting replay, singing-a-long. I’m holding my breath for some good news, drinking coffee to combat my tired eyes, and writing more than I’ve been able to this week. I’m glad my words are back. I don’t feel myself when I can’t write. It is an extension of who I am, but more than that, it is the outlet I need to keep going through all of life’s challenges, joys, sorrows, and “to-do lists”. Writing keeps me in touch with my feelings, and I do believe, that in the act of writing, of the self-awareness it demands, and of being brave with my words, that all of that manifests good things in my life. Or maybe that’s just the power I’ve given it. So be it. Writing and music – and love – are what make my life work.

1. “Sweet L.A.” by Morcheba

Morcheeba Sweet LA Top 5 Music Obsessions Song 1

“Heavy,
you pull on my heart,
to a lonely scene.
Tell me,
I’m more than just half,
more than in-between.”

I just discovered that a new Morcheeba album was released. I’ve been a fan of their music since the 90’s. I love Skye Edwards’ voice. I love songs about L.A., too, and about love. I feel like “Sweet L.A.” is both; about Los Angeles, and about love. And although it feels like an aspirational, fantasy version of L.A., I am still enjoying the breezy, Southern California Summer night feel of it. It makes me want to drive to the ocean and sit on the sand, feel the water on my feet. Its been far too long since the ocean and I have said hello.

2. “To Turn You On” by Robyn Hitchcock

Robyn Hitchcock To Turn You On Top 5 Music Obsessions Song 2

“Spring, Summer,
whenever,
Winter through Fall,
I’d do anything to turn you on.
Anything to turn you on.”

I love this Roxy Music cover by Robyn Hitchcock. This whole album is a delight. I think “To Turn You On” is my favorite cover on it, maybe tied with “The Ghost In You”.

3. “Helpless” (live) by Neil Young

Neil Young Helpless Unplugged Top 5 Music Obsessions Song 3

“Blue, blue windows behind the stars,
yellow moon on the rise,
big birds flying across the sky,
throwing shadows on our eyes.”

I don’t know how, but he’s making me into a Neil Young fan. I don’t think I ever listened enough, not until he started playing him for me. Now I’m diving in deep, and really hearing the songs, taking in the lyrics, and getting it. I’m so grateful for this love in my life, this wonderful man, and all that we bring to each other, introduce to each other, help each other to see differently. I’m so lucky.

4. “Youth” by Daughter

Daughter Youth Top 5 Music Obsessions Song 4

“And if you’re in love,
then you are the lucky one.
Cause most of us are bitter over someone.”

I am the lucky one.

5. “Nothing’s Gonna Hurt You Baby” by Cigarettes After Sex

Cigarettes After Sex Nothings Gonna Hurt You Baby Top 5 Music Obsessions Song 5

“Nothing’s gonna hurt you baby.
As long as you’re with me you’ll be just fine.
Nothing’s gonna hurt you baby.
Nothing’s gonna take you from my side.”

I think “Nothing’s Gonna Hurt You” was the first CAS song I ever heard. Either that or their REO Speedwagon cover. My friend, and fellow-blogger, Susan introduced them to me. This is still my favorite track of theirs. It resonates so much more to me now then when I first heard it a few years back.
