I had just returned home from Summer camp when my Mom told me we were off to the Cinedome (my favorite theater growing up) to see Raiders of the Lost Ark. I was still heart-deep in my hopelessly devoted crush on Han Solo, so I was beyond excited to see him as Indiana Jones. I loved him in it, but even moreso, I loved the character of Marian, how tough she was, like Princess Leia and Wonder Woman (my heroes at the time).

242. Edward Scissorhands
Everything about this film attracted me at the time, Tim Burton’s vision, Winona Ryder, Johnny Depp (back before I lost my taste for him) and VINCENT PRICE. I loved, and still love, the unconventional story of family and self-acceptance, and the overarching question raised of what makes someone human. I love the alternative to a typical fairy tale that this story is, and I love Dianne Wiest’s character in it, too.

243. Fast Times at Ridgemont High
I was a few years shy of being in high school yet when this movie came around, but even still I was taken aback by the honesty of the storytelling, even in the comedic moments, especially in regards to the female characters. I think it is a testament to both Cameron Crowe’s writing, which has always resonated with me and seemed real and unfettered by pretense and stereotyping, as well as the directorial hand of a female filmmaker. There are so many moments in this film that speak to the insecurities, the naivetés, the fear and the missteps of being a teenager.

244. Benny and Joon
Quirky characters with complicated lives, in a movie with some great performances in it from Johnny Depp, Julianne Moore, Mary Stuart Masterson, Aidan Quinn. My heart goes out to all of these characters everytime I watch it – Joon trying so hard to carve out a life for herself (and fall in love in that life), Benny trying so hard to protect her and keep her safe, and somehow have a life, too – and Sam and Ruthie who come into their lives, and end up loving them. Families of choice, as well as circumstance, bonds of love and connection, and the truths that we are all a little broken, all a little off-kilter, and that we all need love.

245. The Lost Boys
This movie is just so much fun to me. Its a Saturday afternoon escape, a drive-in Summer night, or slumber party movie, that has all the key elements for that kind of a night – humor, horror, campy feel, great soundtrack and cast. I love the Corey’s in this, Kiefer Sutherland and his band of “lost boys”, Jason Patric as the tortured new vampire trying to get the girl, save his family (and not have his younger brother either a) tell mom, or b) stake him), Dianne Wiest as the single mom unknowingly dating the head of the vamps (and hey look that’s Richard “Grandpa” Gilmore from Gilmore Girls). The scene with Corey Haim in the bathtub singing, and his reaction to realizing his brother is a vampire are still my favorite moments, without a doubt.
