Tuesday is here already, the week unraveling, unfolding, ticking by minute by minute (even if time isn’t real, even if time is a construct). Insomnia turns my sleep patterns inside out and upside-down sometimes. This week my construct of time awake/time asleep is askew, awake at 3am as if its time for the day to start. Sometimes I just can’t wrestle with sleep anymore. Sometimes (like this morning) I just give in to being awake and start the day. At least it gives me more time to write.
On the flip side of 3am I will be feeling this too early start. 3pm I’ll be wishing I’d wrestled with ladysleep, and gotten more. But, for now, I’m going to slip on my headphones and take in today’s Top 5 Music Obsessions.
Top 5 Music Obsessions – February 11, 2020
Follow along for the month of February on Spotify and YouTube
1. “The Boys Of Summer” (Live at EartH, London) by Bat For Lashes
Live Single (2019)
“I never will forget those nights.
I wonder if it was a dream.
Remember how you made me crazy?
Remember how I made you scream?”
That feeling when one of your favorite artists covers a song you love.
2. “C-Side” by Khruangbin and Leon Bridges
Single “C-SIde” (2020)
“She got them red heels on,
gold hangin’ from her ears –
Melanin lady.
She got her jig on strong.
It’s so good to be here,
with you.
Somebody’s gonna fall in love tonight.”
Digging this new track SO MUCH.
3. “Again & Again” by the bird and the bee
from the album, the bird and the bee (2007)
“It’s a shame,
it’s a shame,
it’s a perfect shame –
creep under my door and we do it again, oh.”
I push play on this track and I think Grey’s Anatomy and seeing Rilo Kiley live in Santa Monica.
Also think, hey, I forgot how much I like the bird and the bee.
4. “circle the drain” by Soccer Mommy
Single, “circle the drain” (2020)
“Things feel that low sometimes,
even when everything is fine,”
I get this song deep down in my guts and bones and soul. I feel it.
5. “Pretty Baby” by Blondie
from the album, Parallel Lines (1978)
“Ya ya baby,
La Dolce Vita is a magic dance,
no-one was listening.
Pretty baby,
un petite ingenue,
a teenage starlet,
I fell in love with you.”
In 1978. Me at 9. I fell hard for Debbie Harry. One of my first crushes.
