Evan Dando Lemonheads Top 5 Music Obsessions

Top 5 Music Obsessions featuring Evan Dando and The Lemonheads

Monday is back again, right where we left it. We may have tried to forget it, or hide from it, but we’ve reunited with each other. Monday’s cannot be avoided no matter how hard we try. Stress seems to have lessened for me this week, at least so far. Mondays are a new start after all, so part of my new start is – breathe more, stress less. We’ll see if it sticks.

Usually, my Monday morning commute is accompanied by an Audiobook, but today I just wanted Music, so Music I had. All the Songs on Today’s Top 5 Music Obsessions list are from my Monday morning Music commute today. Hope you enjoy!

Top 5 Music Obsessions of the Day – Monday, May 7, 2018

1. “Big Gay Heart” by The Lemonheads

I absolutely adore the album Come On Feel The Lemonheads. It is the album that made me fall in love with their music and get a 90’s crush on Mr. Dando. “Big Gay Heart” was not one of my immediate favorites, but this week I can’t get enough of it. I especially love the change at the chorus – my favorite part. I love how much this sounds like a Gram Parsons song, minus the blow job lyric.

I haven’t been able to stop singing the lyrics below today. This Track is taking me over – no wonder its #1 on the Top 5 Music Obsessions today.

“Why can’t you look after yourself and not down on me?
Do you have to try to piss me off ’cause I’m easy to please?”

2. “I’ll Be Your Pilot” by Belle + Sebastian

I’ve been getting into Belle + Sebastian’s EP Series, How To Solve Our Human Problems. If only any of us knew how.

The Songs are a delightful collection of Dream Pop/lilting music with not always so lilting lyrics, beautiful melodies, and harmonies singing about the human condition. You know, all the things we love about B+S.

“I’ll Be Your Pilot” is the Track I’m obsessing over lately. I can’t get enough of it.

Some people take the following lyrics to reference the book The Little Prince. What do you think?

“Lying here,
in the sweet Sahara,
thousand miles to the nearest problem.”

3. “No Words” by Paul McCartney and Wings

Wings No Words Top 5 Music Obsessions Song 3

“No Words” is a track off of Band On the Run, an album I’ve been enjoying and obsessing over lately – especially the 8-Track Quadrophonic version of the album that my boyfriend and I have.

The song was written by Paul McCartney and Denny Laine. “No Words” was Laine’s first co-writing on a Wings album, and his only writing credit on Band On The Run. (from Wikipedia)

“You want to turn your head away,
and someone’s thinking of you.
I wish you’d see,
it’s only me.
I love you.”

4. “Timeless Melody” by The La’s

The La's Timeless Melody Top 5 Music Obsessions Song 4

Everyone seems to know “There She Goes”, and then not much else by The La’s. Though they were definitely known as a one-hit wonder in the Brit Pop 90’s (at least here in the U.S.), I’ve always enjoyed their music well past that one big song. In particular, I’ve been obsessing a lot over the track, “Timeless Melody“.

“Timeless Melody” is off the 1990 Self-Titled album from The La’s. The album that also features “There She Goes”.

“The melody always finds me,
whenever the thought reminds me,
breaking a chain inside my head.”

5. “Wide Awake” by J. Mascis and Cat Power

J Mascis and Cat Power Wide Awake Top 5 Music Obsessions Song 5

Somehow I never heard J. Mascis 2014 Solo Album, Tied to a Star, until this morning. I found it on an Apple Music Playlist called A Walk In the Woods. It reminds me a lot of the soundtrack to the movie Away We Go. I rewatched the film last night. I love it so much, and the music fits everything so perfectly. This song – “Wide Awake” – could have been in it.

Chan Marshall’s (Cat Power) voice is so subtle here. Delicate and almost not there, but it works. J. and Chan’s voices work beautifully together. I’d love to hear them do more together.

“Come on over, baby.
Time to figure out,
dreaming of the reason,
what will bring you around.”

What do you think about today’s Top 5 Music Obsessions? What songs are you obsessing over this Monday? Any music you’d like me to listen to and consider for an upcoming Top 5 Music Obsession feature?

Let’s hear it for Evan Dando and The Lemonheads, Belle + Sebastian, Paul McCartney and Wings, The La’s, and J. Mascis with Cat Power. You made my Monday!
