“Mariners Apartment Complex” by Lana Del Rey - “You lose your way, just take my hand. You’re lost at sea, then I’ll command your boat to me again. Don’t look too far, right where you are, that’s where I am. I’m your man.” - Once upon a music obsessive time, I discovered “Video Games” by Lana Del Rey. The song was the talk of the music blogs at the time, and after a first listen I was hooked. I fell in love with Lana’s sleepy, sensual, post-blues voice, and the stories she sang in her songs. In recent times I lost my early affections for her music, not really connecting with her more recent tracks. But when I first heard “Mariners Apartment Complex” I fell hard for her music, her voice, and her sung stories once again. This song connected with me immediately and seemed to fit exactly where I was at the time, and it still fits right into how I feel, right now. I love when music does that. - I love the story in this song. About a woman who is stronger than she’s taken for, who loves enormously, who believes in love and in people, in change, and in saving each other with love. I like the gender swap in the lyrics “I’m your man”, and how it relays something that has nothing to do with gender, at least to me. I take it to mean more about strength, and about being there for the person you love. The kind of strength that love can sometimes provide. - - - #sotd #songoftheday #music #favoritesongs #lanadelrey #marinersapartmentcomplex #allthingsmusic
Black Box Recorder “The Facts Of Life” - “It’s just the facts of life. There’s no master plan.” - I stumbled on this song this morning and can’t seem to stop hitting replay. How have I not ever heard Black Box Recorder before? I thought I had, and I thought they were something so different sound and genre wise. I’m digging the indie pop sound that feels reminiscent of 90’s Brit Pop to me. It also reminds me some of Echobelly, Stars, AIR, and Drugstore. - Im loving Sarah Nixey’s voice and the whole vibe of this tune. - - - #sotd #songoftheday #blackboxrecorder #sarahnixey #lukehaines #johnmoore #thefactsoflife #2000 #earlyaughts
Radiohead “Fake Plastic Trees”. - “If I could be who you wanted, If I could be who you wanted, all the time.” - “Fake Plastic Trees” is a song that will always, without exception, make me cry. It happens at the end of the song, in the midst of those last heartbreaking lines of “all the time” that fade into what feels like desolate oblivion. It hits at something raw and real and heartbreaking in me, every single time I play it. - In 1995, when The Bends, and “Fake Plastic Trees” came out I certainly was feeling those desolate oblivion, not good enough sentiments in an overwhelming way. I can remember wanting someone so badly, but feeling so far less than what they would ever want. Instead of pushing through I ran fast in the opposite way. I ran and hid and never went back. - The unfortunate reality was this – I was wrong. I was what the person wanted, just as much as I’d wanted them. But, because I ran away from it I never got to know how we could have been together. Self-esteem, what a fucking mess it can make us when we lean too far into that low end of self-worth. Instead of heartbreak, I was left with the weight of a “what if” regret to carry around with me. - What a lonely feeling that is. - Regardless the painful memory this song evokes, I still love it. Sometimes I need to feel it. Sometimes we all do. Right? - - - #sotd #songoftheday #radiohead #fakeplastictrees #thebends #thomyorke #1995 #favoritesongs
Liz Phair “What Makes You Happy” - “I feel the sun on my back. I smell the earth in my skin. I see the sky above me like a full recovery.” - I’ve always loved this song – so much. And, I’ve always connected to the lyrics, and the sentiment of trying to find the right relationship while seeking approval from those in your life for said “right relationship”, and all the trial and error that goes on. - There’s a lot of finding yourself in the subtext to this song, too, at least I’ve always taken it that way. And a “follow Your bliss” kind of message. - I know everyone has BIG love for Exile in Guyville, and though I love it, too, my BIG LIZ love is always with whitechocolatespaceegg. It’s the album and songs that just get me, that I get right back. - - - #lizphair #sotd #songoftheday #whatmakesyouhappy #whitechocolatespaceegg #1998 #nineties #womeninmusic #favoritesongs
