Give Me Five…featuring Morcheeba

Today feels a little easier, though I’m not sure why. I did sleep, more than usual, but the dreams were like gory, slasher horror movies and I kept trying to get away. I keep finding myself in the middle of a nightmare, aware that I’m there, that I’m dreaming, trying to wake up. I know it’s the anxiety, and the uncertainty that are playing leading roles in my life right now (and wreaking havoc on my psyche), I just keep hoping for an antidote, or at least a one day reprieve.

I still woke today feeling a little lighter, a little hopeful, a little bit less weighed down by the ick. Let’s see if I can hang on to it. As usual, I’m leaning in to music. Magic music. I’m counting on you to do your thing.

SONG 1: “TRIGGER HIPPIE” BY MORCHEEBA

Morcheeba
“Trigger Happy” by Morcheeba – from the album, Who Can You Trust? (1996)

“Tune in,
drop out of love,
pull the trigger,
I’m a hippie.
So said a truth,
in blood,
alive and well.
You push the buttons.”

I used to drive to the beach some afternoons and park by the ocean. With the windows rolled down I’d put the driver’s seat back and close my eyes. The ocean air, the sounds of kids playing, seagulls doing their gull-things, an occasional car parking, they’d become a melody that mixed with what was playing through my speakers. Morcheeba always reminds me of those afternoons.

This song reminds me of another time, too. Also by the ocean. Floating, drinking, laughing. Feeling a lightness that we couldn’t sustain. But, for a little bit, a stolen month or two, there was something beautiful and free between us.

SONG 2: “FOXES” BY MIDNIGHT SISTER

Midnight Sister
“Foxes” by Midnight Sister – from the album, Painting the Roses (2021)

“The king and the queen were happy.
Well the storm came in,
between us.”

The 70’s disco vibe is part of what I’m loving about this song, “Foxes”, and about Midnight Sister. Another newer discovery, this track is one that is an endorphin rush, an almost guaranteed mood lifter, and so catchy and funky-fun.

SONG 3: “ONCE TWICE MELODY” BY BEACH HOUSE

Beach House
“Once Twice Melody” by Beach House – from the album, Once Twice Melody (2022)

“No matter where you go,
there’ll always be your shadow.
Lalala, days go by,
lalala, in her eyes.
Once, twice, melody.

I’ve fallen so hard for Beach House over the last few months. Their music is soothing, breezy, layered in feelings, and just one of those go-to’s that I can’t seem to get enough of. “Once Twice Melody” is the title track of Beach House’s latest album. Oh my stars, I love a good title track – and this one is so good.

SONG 4: “BLAME” BY GABRIELS

Gabriels
“Blame” by Gabriels – from the EP, Bloodline (2021)

“Mornings turn to night,
and then the night becomes the day.
I can’t keep with up with time.”

Oh how much I feel those lyrics above. That is my current reality, day-to-day, losing my grasp with time. Much of that feeling of disconnect is tied to insomnia. Part is from not having a job, and being in the rollercoaster craziness of job hunting – the stop/go/wait of it all. I feel it. Oh yes, I feel it.

Also, how have I NEVER heard Gabriels before? Wow wow wow.

Gabriels is a combination of soul and R&B, that goes beyond both categories, traversing into something else – something wow.

If you want to be wowed by Gabriels more, head on over HERE.

SONG 5: “ANGELES” BY SETH AVETT AND JESSICA LEA MAYFIELD

Seth Avett and Jessica Lea Mayfield
“Angeles” by Seth Avett and Jessica Lea Mayfield – from the album, Seth Avett and Jessica Lea Mayfield Sing Elliott Smith (2015)

“I can make you satisfied in everything you do.
All your secret wishes could right now be coming true.
And be forever with my poison arms around you.”

One of my forever favorite songs. One of my forever favorite songs about Los Angels. One of my always always always makes me cry songs. I love the original, by Elliott Smith, more than I have words to describe. That said, I also adore Seth and Jessica’s version.

Especially live.
