Endings are hard. As a writer I feel the weight of it, the difficulty. As a reader and viewer, I feel it, and have felt it, too. A good ending is rare. Most finales are okay, often expected, not all that memorable. Some are a bitter disappointment, especially, it seems, when the show is highly lauded. Occasionally though, you get a good one. One that hits just right. One that stays with you long after the credits roll and longer still, taking up residency in your best endings ever files.
“Everyone’s Waiting”, the finale to Six Feet Under, is one of those rare endings. Emotional. Impactful. Phenomenal. Unforgettable.
I hope to write an ending someday that comes close to this, at least a little near its wonder and awe.
