Give Me Five…Featuring The Cranberries

The rain is coming down and this is the first Monday of the Spring time change. I used to love this time change. Pre-quarantine, I preferred it due to the light-late aspect. Driving home while the sun was still in the sky made me feel like I had more of my day left. But now that I’m at the year anniversary working from home I’m less keen on waking when it is still dark outside. Darkness, mixed with the rain, made me want to crawl back in bed and drift off to dreamland a little bit longer.

But, I got up. I made coffee. I took my meds. I turned on the music and said its time to start the day, whether I’m ready, or not.

So, let’s get to it. We all could probably use some music today.

Give Me Five – March, 15, 2021

Listen (and follow along for March’s GM5) on Spotify and YouTube

Song 1: “Sunday” by The Cranberries

“Sunday” by The Cranberries – from the album, Everybody Else Is Doing It, Why Can’t We? (1993)

“And I didn’t find the words,
to say I love you.
And I couldn’t find the time,
to say I need you.
It wouldn’t come out right.
It wouldn’t come out right.
It just came out all wrong.”

As much as The Cranberries, and the album this track is from, meant to me in 1993, I sometimes feel like their music, and this album (and the one that followed), mean more to me now. Maybe I feel it differently, deeper, more full of feeling, memory, and reflection. Or maybe, my fondness has grown with the years.

This is the first song I head today. A random play, of sorts. Part of this week’s Spotify Discover Playlist. This song isn’t a discovery, but it was a welcomed reminder of an album I love.

I wish Dolores O’Riordan was still with us.

It wasn’t in Germany, but this is the year/tour I got to see them live.

Song 2: “Killer” by Phoebe Bridgers

Phoebe Bridgers "Killer" GMF
“Killer” by Phoebe Bridgers – from the album, Stranger In the Alps (2017)

“Know that I’ve burned every playlist,
and I’ve given all my love.”

Those lyrics, they hit me right in the center of so many big feelings.

I love Phoebe’s music so much.

I’m always volleying between what song is my favorite of hers. It changes a lot. This week, right now, today, this one is my favorite.

Song 3: “A Window/O’Keeffe” by Emmy The Great

Emmy The Great "A Window" GMF

“A Window/O’Keeffe” by Emmy The Great – from the album, April / 月音 (2020)

“And then we walked,
through everybody’s videos,
and when we finally stopped,
we’re underneath the window.

And someone’s playing music.
Someone’s watching over us.
And something ’bout this music,
reminds me of what has just gone past –
that was today.”

It has been quite a while since I listened to Emmy The Great. It was “great” to hear her again, thanks to Spotify’s Discovery Playlist. I didn’t even know about this 2020 release of hers.

Really, really digging this song today.

Song 4: “That’s How Rumors Get Started” by Margo Price

“That’s How Rumors Get Started” by Margo Price – That’s How Rumors Get Started (2020)

“Word travels faster,
than a whisper in the wind.
Now all the birds are flying south.
Black hawks and doves,
we are at it once again.
And you’re talking out of both sides of your mouth.”

Another album from last year I didn’t know about until today.

Very excited to dig more into it.

This track (the title track) is obsessively good. I want more.

Song 5: “We’ll Meet Again” by Karen Elson

Karen Elson "We'll Meet Again" GMF
“We’ll Meet Again” by Karen Elson – from the EP, Radio Redhead, Vol. 1 (2020)

“We’ll meet again,
don’t know where,
don’t know when.
But, I know we’ll meet again,
some sunny day.”

A perfect way to end today’s five – with a cool cover of a song saying goodbye.

I’ve always loved the juxtaposition of melancholy and happiness that this song evokes. I feel grief and goodbye in it – in a final sort of way. At the same time, I feel love and hope and fondness, too. Feels perfect for today, to me.
