July Talk Top 5 Music Obsessions

Top 5 Music Obsessions featuring July Talk

Today has gone by so fast. I feel almost dizzy. I woke up early full of motivation, and a good thing I did as I’ve needed it all day. Work has been non-stop, and in-between I’ve been adding a couple of more notes/feedback to the pages submitted by my fellow writing workshoppers. Tuesday is writing workshop day, and I’m so grateful for it. It is one of the big highlights of my week.

It feels like a blessing to be writing again and to have so many ideas and scenes and scenarios and ideas to write about. I was stalled and blocked for such a long time. I feel like the workshop helped to unlock something in me.

Music has been helping, too. As I’m known to say, music always helps.

So, let’s cut to the music already, today’s Top 5 Music Obsessions specifically.

I have two more new releases that I’m big-time obsessing over, as well as some favorite throwbacks from the ’80s and ’90s that I’ve been playing on repeat all day.

What have you been listening to, and obsessing over? I’d love to hear.

1. “Governess Shadow” by July Talk
Single (2020)

“The first time I see Alice,
she,
she climbs a tree.
She’s headed east.
It’s not that she can’t breathe.”

I can’t help but think of Alice when I hear this song. Alice, as in Wonderland fame. I love this look of Alice, modern, lost, anxious. I know it may not be that Alice at all, but that’s where my imagination is taking me.

July Talk is one of my favorite bands. I’ve said it before, and I’m sure I will say it countless times again – if you get the chance to see them perform live (once the world re-sets), don’t hesitate. Just do it.

2. “De-Luxe” by Lush
from the EP, Mad Love (1990)

“Drink in your eyes.
Drink in your sighs.
Grass in my thighs my aching legs.”

This song is so dreamy. This song is so sexy.

I’m so into Lush today.

3. “Aries” by Gorillaz, featuring Peter Hook and Georgia
from “Song Machine Episode 3” Single (2020)

“I’m looking out at a volcano.
Trying to read the world today and see where you’re at.”

Yay! New Gorillaz track! Yay! With Peter Hook! Yay! And it’s called “Aries” – my star sign. Yes. Yes. Yes.

Lyrically and sonically this track feels so relevant and of right now. I keep hitting repeat. Again and again and again.

I love the New Order/Hook touches I can hear, and the Georgia/Hot Chip kinda flavor. It all mixes up so well with Damon’s vocals, too.

So good.

4. “Run and Run” by The Psychedelic Furs
from the album, Forever Now (1982)

“Go on get Tarzan.
Go on get Jane.
Go on get Superman.
Go on get Lois Lane.”

I wonder how many songs the names Tarzan, Jane, Superman, and Lois Lane appear in? I can think of a few. Can you?

I’ve been diving in deep into old albums from my teenage and twenty-something years, playing them from start-to-finish (the way I always used to listen to music), and re-discovering deeper cuts that I had forgotten about.

Forever Now is one of those albums. “Run and Run” is one of those songs.

5. “Catch” by The Cure
from the album, Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me (1987)

“And sometimes we would spend the night,
just rolling about on the floor,
and I remember even though it felt soft at the time,
I always used to wake up sore.”

One of my forever favorite Cure songs. It actually may be my very favorite Cure song (it’s hard to say, there are about 4 others that vie for that top spot).

I have specific, very vivid memories associated with this song. And I have specific, very vivid memories of nights like that on the floor.
