October is my favorite month of the year. Fall is my favorite season. Today marks the start of October and with it, a set of Top 5 Music Obsessions made up of Women In Music.
These 5 songs I simply cannot get enough of today, starting with a track off of Bat For Lashes new album that (in Natasha Khan’s words) is a synth-pop love letter to the ‘80s sci–fi and fantasy films of her youth. I listen and am taken back to my teen years, and am also reminded of the soundtrack to the Netflix Series, “Stranger Things.” I love Natasha’s voice no matter what the genre, mood, or theme she’s singing in. I fell in love with her music the first time I heard “Daniel”, back in 2009.
Next up is a song and artist I discovered on a Playlist my oldest daughter made for a good friend of hers. I was immediately drawn into Alexa Melo’s voice and musical style. I keep hitting repeat, repeat and repeat again. I love a good cover, and Today’s Top 5 Music Obsessions have two of them – this is the first one – a fantastic Radiohead cover.
I’ve been a fan of Lissie for some time now, and have especially loved her take on other people’s songs. I did not expect to ever hear her cover Rob Zombie, but my oh my I’m glad she did. This is a perfect cover song for October. I can’t get enough of her unique take on “Dragula”.
I can’t remember how I came upon Saint Cava’s song “Deeper”. I think it was via a Spotify recommendation, but I honestly can’t remember. However the song came to me, though, I’m glad it did. This track sounds best with headphones or turned up loud in the car while driving through the city, at night.
A few months ago I read a feature about Ambar Lucid in the LA Times and was immediately curious to hear her music. I looked her up on Spotify right away, and have been fangirling her ever since. I love the inclusion of Spanish in “Mar de Lianto”, mixed in with the English. This song feels so Los Angeles right now, to me.
