Emmylou Harris Top 5 Music Obsessions

Top 5 Music Obsessions featuring Emmylou Harris

The day is unraveling slowly, a little slower than I’d like. If I had my way I’d be on the road to home right now, or already there and taking a nap. I’m not one for sleeping during the day. It usually incites nightmares/stress dreams, napping during daylight, so I typically avoid the experience. But today I’d risk my subconscious messing with me and indulge in the rare sleep with the sun in the sky.

But, a nap is not in the cards. Nor really is an easy evening. There’s dinner to make and grocery shopping that can’t be delayed any longer. It almost feels like I have a job waiting for me after my “day job” ends. Moonlighting as a homemaker. I sometimes wish I had a clone. Sometimes it’s hard being a grown-up.

In lieu of a nap, I’d take an afternoon of movie watching. I might doze off a few times, but I’d still enjoy it. Or a day of binging a show I’ve always wanted to see, or of a favorite one that is worth a rewatch. A day spent in comfy clothes, pillows, and our California king bed. My head on my boyfriend’s chest (my forever favorite spot).

Again, not something that can happen today, but I can daydream a bit about it hopefully happening this weekend.

At least there is music to get me by today, and songs and words exchanged with my love. If I felt better I’d walk over to one of the museums at lunch, sit outside with sunglasses and a book. The weather is cooling down enough to make that appealing. But, I’m not feeling it today. Maybe tomorrow.

Top 5 Music Obsessions – Tuesday, August 21, 2018

Listen via Spotify and YouTube

1. “For No One” by Emmylou Harris
from the album, Pieces Of the Sky (1975)

“Your day breaks,
your mind aches,
there will be times when all the things she said will fill your head;
you won’t forget her.”

While searching for a Beatles song to send to Chris I found this cover that I’d never heard before. Emmylou’s voice is stunning. This is such a beautifully bittersweet cover. I’m glad I stumbled on it today.

2. “When I Hold You In My Arms” by Neil Young
from the album, Are You Passionate? (2002)

“When I hold you in my arms,
it’s a breath of fresh air.
When I hold you in my arms,
I forget what’s out there.
All those people with their faces,
walkin’ up the street,
they don’t have to say a thing –
just look around and you see.”

I would give anything to be home right now in the arms of my love. Honestly, I can’t think of anywhere I’d rather be today.

3. “Dreams-Come-Come-True-Girl” by Cass McCombs, featuring Karen Black
from the album, Catacombs (2009)

Cass McCombs Dreams Come True Girl Top 5 Music Obsessions Song 3

“You’re not my dream girl.
You’re not my reality girl.
You’re my dreams-come-true-girl.”

A song that came on my Spotify Discovery Playlist this morning. A song I’d nearly forgotten. I love the idea of something being in-between a dream and reality, or maybe better than both dreams and reality. A dream come true/a dream realized kind of love.

I feel like that’s what we have.

4. “A Little Uncanny” by Conor Oberst
from the album, Salutations (2017)

Conor Oberst A Little Uncanny Top 5 Music Obsessions Song 4

“I miss Christopher Hitchens.
I miss Oliver Sacks.
I miss poor Robin Williams.
I miss Sylvia Plath.
Every morning’s a desert.
Every night is a flood.
They say a party can kill you,
well, sometimes I wish it would.

But I’ll get strong enough.
I’ll be man enough.
To keep myself in check.
‘Cause all my friends that flew to town,
said that’s what they expect.”

It has been ages since I listened to Conor Oberst. I heard this track randomly and immediately went to the 2017 album it came from. I’m not sure I ever listened to the entire thing before today. I’m obsessing over all of it today. I missed his songwriting.

Right now, this is my favorite track off it it…tied closely with “Gossamer Thin” and “Next of Kin”.

5. “Sometime” by Robin Guthrie and Mark Gardener
from the album, Universal Road (2015)

“It’s how you come alive,
so let’s go.”

I don’t know how I never heard of this album. Thanks to a good friend, I was introduced to this track, and the album it came from, today. Guthrie of Cocteau Twins and Gardener of Ride. As my friend said – Cocteau Twins + Ride = Dreamy. I definitely agree.
