Today’s Top 5 Music Obsessions are making this Monday more bearable and helping to pull me out of the sad I’m feeling. Two are songs that were shared with me from the man I love, both of which are helping exponentially. He’s so good at being there for me when I’m not so okay which is a huge thing to me. Not something I’m all that used to in a relationship. At all. I’ve always had to be the stronger one all the time, and though I am strong, and strive to be strong, it feels wonderful to not always have to be. He’s so good to me.
I’m going to be forever grateful we found each other. Forever. I love him beyond words.
Top 5 Music Obsessions of the Day – July 9, 2018
Listen here on Spotify and YouTube
1. “I’d Run Away” by The Jayhawks
“Yeah, I’d run away,
I’d run away with you, baby.”
I’ve been rediscovering The Jayhawks as I’ve been introducing them. We picked up the album Tomorrow the Green Grass, my favorite Jayhawks’ album, while we were in San Francisco this past weekend. We listened to it on our way back home. I forgot how much I love track 2 (“I’d Run Away”). It’s my favorite on the album, followed very closely by track 1 (“Blue”).
We ran away this weekend, in a way. I wish we’d been able to stay longer. I wish somehow we’d been able to move our lives/our life together there and been able to stay.
2. “Magic In the Air” by Badly Drawn Boy
“And if you should lose me,
you will track me down, again,
before the summer ends –
‘Cause love is contagious,
when it’s alright.”
We are more than alright.
We are everything.
And I hope you never ever lose me or let me go.
3. “Straight to You” by Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds
“This is the time that I’ll come running,
straight to you.
For I am captured,
straight to you.
For I am captured,
one more time.”
Nick Cave is one of our connections. Songs of his we shared with each other right at the start of us. Songs of his were messages we sent to each other before we could say all we felt to each other, in person, every day. We have so much music that is ours, so many singers, so many songs. I love how music connected us at the start and continues to connect us as we grow more in love with each other.
This is one of the two songs he sent to me today. Well, one of the two that are part of today’s Top 5 Music Obsessions. We’ve shared more than just two today. Sharing music between us is one of my favorite things we do. Each song he sends feels like he’s here with me/that I’m there with him. The songs weaving through the ether, the spaces between, the miles, and keeping us – us.
4. “If You Need Me” by Wilson Pickett
“I still love you,
always thinkin’ of you.
I still love you,
always thinkin’ of you.
No matter what the people say,
I won’t stay away.
And if you need me I’ll hurry home where I,
I belong.”
Another song he sent to me, right when I was feeling messy sad. It felt like he grabbed my hand and kissed me and told me everything is going to be alright.
As I said, the songs we share connect us. Every day. All the time. Always.
5. “He Called Me Baby” by Candi Staton
“He called me baby,
baby,
all night long.
Used to hold and kiss me.
till the dawn.”
I’d never heard of Candi Staton until today. Spotify’s Discover Weekly had this song in the mix and I immediately recognized the chorus. It was sampled in the song “Kandi” by One Eskimo, a track I obsessed over last summer.
But after hearing this “original” I have to say I love this more than the song that sampled it. I want to hear more of Candi Staton.
