Today’s Top 5 Music Obsessions are running on a loop while I try to get through the day. The hours are ticking by slower than normal, which is exacerbated by how tired I am. I keep fading into that blur of heavy lids and achy limbs. But, tomorrow is the start of a three-day weekend away. Our first. Which is the bigger reason why today is moving at a snail’s pace.
I can’t wait for tomorrow morning to be here.
Top 5 Music Obsessions of the Day – July 5, 2018

1. “Invisible Ink” by Aimee Mann
from the album, Lost In Space (2002)
“What some take for magic at first glance,
is just sleight-of-hand,
depending on what you believe.
Something gets lost when you translate.
It’s hard to keep straight.
Perspective is everything.”
My perspective is ever skewed by love and hopeless (hopeful?) optimism. It can become naive, though I like to think I see the magic that no one else cares to see. I hope I’m not being naive.
I like seeing the world this way. I like loving the way I do.
This album is one of my favorites, but it’s a hard one to get through. An album of love and addiction told with such raw accuracy. Beautiful and bittersweet, every single song.
2. “To Bring You My Love” by Polly Jean Harvey
from the album, To Bring You My Love (1995)
“Climbed over mountains.
Traveled the sea.
Cast down off heaven.
Cast down on my knees.
I’ve lain with the devil.
Cursed god above.
Forsaken heaven.
To bring you my love.”
Powerful and raw sounding. PJ has been singing a lot to me today.
3. “In my Veins” by Andrew Belle, featuring Erin Mccarley
“Everything is dark.
It’s more than you can take.
But you catch a glimpse of sunlight,
shining, shining down on your face,
your face,
oh, your face.”
I love your face. The way every emotion lives in your eyes. The way you look when you are still sleeping next to me, or just starting to wake, with the sun starting to paint shadows and lights on the walls, the bedsheets, our skin, your face. You are so breathtaking to me.
4. “Keeping You” by Tanya Donelly
from the album, Beautysleep (2002)
“You landed here from inner space.
You landed with that screwed-up look on your face.
I wanted you from way back when.
I wanted you for years,
then years again.”
I can’t imagine a reality without us now. I never will be able to. My heart is going to keep you forever.
5. “Every Time the Sun Comes Up” by Sharon Van Etten
from the album, Are We There (2014)
“Pace man,
for you hold my horses patient.
Hey man,
tricks can wait to heal my emotions.”
Patience. Love. Everything will sort itself out. We have everything we truly need already.
