Friday Top 5 Music Obsessions are lingering in the 90’s. Funny how a decade comes in sometimes and takes over. I started the morning in the 60’s but somehow took a leap into my 20’s. Not that I’d want to go back to me at that age. No, I’d rather be here now. My 40’s are not too bad at all. And they’ve recently gotten exponentially better.
Top 5 Music Obsessions – June 22, 2018
Stream today’s Top 5 and the rest of the week as it unfolds, on Spotify and YouTube
1. “Strange Currencies” by R.E.M.
“Now fool might be my middle name.
but I’d be foolish not to say –
I’m going to make whatever it takes,
ring you up,
call you down,
sign your name,
secret love,
make it rhyme.
Take you in and make you mine.”
I remember playing Monster in the before-hours mornings at Tower Records. This song, and “Crush With Eyeliner” were always my favorite. “Strange Currencies” came on this morning while I shuffle-played an old playlist, reminding me how much I love it. Though there is something slightly sinister in the chorus (and maybe underlying the whole song), I’m feeling the “you will be mine” in a different light today. Passionate, instead of sinister.
2. “Supernova” by Liz Phair
“You walk in clouds of glitter,
and the sun reflects your eyes,
and every time the wind blows,
I can smell you in the sky.
Your kisses are as wicked as an F-16
And you fuck like a volcano,
and you’re everything to me.”
Liz understands.
3. “Your Sweet Voice” by Matthew Sweet
“If I can close my eyes without a fear.
Speak to me with your sweet voice near.”
Beautiful track. One I’d forgotten about on Girlfriend (I think I was always too obsessed with “Evangeline”). I love re-discovering albums and discovering songs I may have overlooked, or forgotten.
4. “Not Enough Time” by INXS
“Not enough time for all that I want for you.
Not enough time for every kiss.
And every touch,
and all the nights,
I wanna be inside you.”
I’d love to make time stop. It goes by so damn fast, especially when we’re together.
5. “Do You Love Me Now?” by The Breeders
“Do you think of me,
like I dream of you?”
Three-way-tied as my favorite Breeders song.
