Driving to work this morning I listened to today’s Top 5 Music Obsessions on repeat and thought a lot about my favorite book, God-Shaped Hole. This quote from the book kept tapping on my consciousness, repeating itself like the 5 songs coming out of my speakers.
“He was the only person I’d ever met, besides myself, who believed music was a cosmic language that spoke directly to our souls—to ease our pain and to remind us we weren’t alone.” (from God-Shaped Hole by Tiffanie DeBartolo)
It made me smile and think “uh-huh”.
Top 5 Music Obsessions – June 18, 2018
Stream today’s Top 5 and the rest of the week as it unfolds, on Spotify and YouTube
1. “This Is Love” by PJ Harvey
“I can’t believe that life’s so complex,
when I just want to sit here and watch you undress.”
Polly Jean speaking truth on the complexities and simplicities of life and love with “This Is Love”. Amen.
2. “(Are You) the One That I’ve Been Waiting For” by Nick Cave And The Bad Seeds
“There’s a man who spoke wonders,
though I’ve never met him.
He said,
“He who seeks finds and who knocks will be let in.”
I think of you in motion,
and just how close you are getting.
And, how every little thing anticipates you,
all down my veins my heart-strings call.
Are you the one that I’ve been waiting for?”
Prelude to the start. “(Are You) the One That I’ve Been Waiting For” premonition-ing what was to come.
3. “Perfect Day” by Lou Reed
“Oh, it’s such a perfect day,
I’m glad I spent it with you.
Oh, such a perfect day.
You just keep me hanging on.
You just keep me hanging on.”
I think “Perfect Day” may have been the first Lou Reed song I heard, post-Velvet’s. I think I heard this track before “Walk On the Wild Side”. I know it led me to Transformer, one of my favorite albums. Though “Satellite of Love” is my forever Transformer-favorite, this is a close second.
4. “Is This Love?” by Bob Marley
“I, I’m willing and able.
So, I throw my cards on your table.”
The songs stack high, from one to the other. Nick and Norah’s infinite playlist has nothing on this.
5.”Wild Horses” (Acoustic Version) by The Rolling Stones
“Wild horses,
couldn’t drag me away.”
My favorite Stones. Even more than ever.
