I’m getting excited to see Aimee Mann play live again, and have been revisiting a lot of her music in anticipation. In my revisiting, I discovered a cover she did this year for the TV limited series, Assassination of “Gianni Versace: American Crime Story”. I’ve always loved “Drive” by The Cars, and vividly remember the powerful video with model/actor Paulina Porizkova that used to play on MTV in heavy rotation. I was excited to see that Aimee covered it, even before I hit play.
Aimee’s version of “Drive” is stripped down, with just her voice and an acoustic guitar. There is a very 90’s sensibility to this version that I love, and her interpretation of the track feels very Aimee. The story of the song comes through even stronger, and more emotional than the original.
