“Waltz #2 (XO) by Elliott Smith

I’m trying to stay away from melancholy today, but then “Waltz #2 (XO)” comes on and I have to listen. I will always love this song. I will always want to hear this song. Yes, it makes me sad. Yes, it makes me cry. But, it also makes me feel less alone in this loneliness and loss, and that has to count for something.

Oh, Elliott, I sure do wish you were still alive and that we could have coffee, or whiskey, or both.

Song of the Day

I’m never gonna know you now,
but I’m gonna love you anyhow.”

There is something within “Waltz #2 (XO)” that delves deep into my psyche, into the locked up parts of my head and heart, and circles around with the sadness that’s there right now. It’s not necessarily unwelcome, and it doesn’t really feel self-indulgently destructive to listen to. It emotionally cuts me up, though, and reminds me that there are so many stories untold within me. So many things I never got to say.
