Top 5 Music Obsessions featuring The Weakerthans

Monday’s Top 5 Music Obsessions are made up of a mix of songs that were obsessing me over the weekend. A few are new discoveries, one is inspired by a book I just finished re-reading, and two are old favorites that I was listening to on vinyl over the weekend. I had the best weekend I’ve had since the breakup. Though there were a few rough moments, I pretty much reclaimed my weekend. I’ve been reclaiming myself a lot, too. I’ve realized how much of my projects and things I gave up in order to be a part of someone else’s projects, ideas, and dreams.

I don’t regret it. I believed in him and in the things we worked on. But, I neglected myself and my dreams and projects and ideas. At the time I really believed they were our projects and dreams and ideas, but now that we are apart he took them all with him. All of them. Though, I know we could have never continued working together. It would have been too painful, at least to me. But…it was a reality check. They were never even part of mine – the projects, ideas, and dreams. They were always his, and I was helping him, but even when he said “ours”, and we said “ours”, it wasn’t really.

Another life lesson learned, and I’m grateful for the learning, even if it hurts.

But, I’m reclaiming. I’m doing things and seeing friends and am back to seriously working on my novel. Today I woke up feeling a lot better than I have. I’ll get myself back eventually. I know it, and I believe in me. My music obsessing definitely helps. Music heals, inspires, and keeps me going. Music is my partner now.

Top 5 Music Obsessions – Monday, June 4, 2018

Listen on Spotify and YouTube

1. “Left and Leaving” by The Weakerthans

“I’ll try not to wonder where you are.”

I’m still working on that one. Its hard to cut off all emotions, to not care, to not wonder. I’m not there yet. I try every day. But yeah, I’m not there yet.

2. “Damn Your Love” by Ruby Force

“It’s been three whole days,
with no words from you.
How do you do it?”

Three weeks, actually. I’ll never understand how he can do it.

3. “Sweet Sixteen” by Billy Idol

“Built a moon for a rocking chair,
I never guessed it would rock her far from here.”

I turned seventeen when this song came out. I loved it at the time. I’d forgotten all about the song until I heard it this weekend. It sounds like Billy is covering Chris Isaak, to me.

4. “It’s You” by Fiat Lux

“And if you asked me to dance,
I might.”

New music from an early 80’s new wave band who are back to making music together – at least two of them.

I really miss dancing.

5. “Alice” by Cocteau Twins

“Looks deceive me.
Listening,
and lost.
Didn’t you know Alice?”

I love this song so much. Definitely on my forever favorite song list (which is ever-expanding).
