Top 5 Music Obsessions featuring Simon and Garfunkel

I’m feeling so much better today. This is the first day since the breakup happened that I’ve woken up feeling good.  I think I found some closure finally, and though I still hurt and I’m still hurt and heartbroken, I finally see a start in healing and being me again. Closure should never be underestimated.

Bring it on June. You have to be miles better than May.

It also helped to have new music last night to listen to, and write about. And to have a friend share in the excitement with me. I’m really lucky for the friends I have in my life. I’m really lucky for all the music.

So here’s to starting to feel better and here’s to today’s Top 5 Music Obsessions.

Top 5 Music Obsessions – June 1, 2018

1. “America” by Simon and Garfunkel

“‘Kathy, I’m lost,’ I said,
though I knew she was sleeping.
I’m empty and aching and I don’t know why.
Counting the cars on the New Jersey Turnpike.
They’ve all come to look for America.”

I played this song as I drove on the New Jersey Turnpike a few years ago. Someday I want to go back and really see things, and not just be on a quick work-related turnaround.

2. “June” by Pete Yorn

Pete Yorn June Top 5 Music Obsessions Song 2

“Pots and pans are indestructible.
How do you respect your room?
If you hadn’t gone tomorrow,
You could have stayed on ‘til June.”

I can’t have a June 1st without listening to this song. It would be impossible.

3. “One Day Like This” by Elbow

“What made me behave that way?
Using words I never say.
I can only think it must be love.”

One of my favorite songs. So beautiful.

4. “Sonnet” by The Verve

The Verve Sonnet Top 5 Music Obsessions Song 4

“Yes,
there’s love if you want it.
Don’t sound like no sonnet,
my lord.”

I fell hard for this song when I heard Richard Ashcroft play it live and acoustic, just him and a guitar, when we went to see Ashcroft and Liam Gallagher. There’s a lot of hurt and bittersweet memories when I think about that show, but this song is transcending those feelings. The magic of music is endless.

5. “Keeping You” by Tanya Donelly

“My heart’s not new.
I’m not like you.
I’ve loved and been loved well,
and badly too.
My body’s been through everything.
I’ve used and been used,
I got over it.”

I’m getting over it.
