Massive Attack Top 5 Music Obsessions

Top 5 Music Obsessions featuring Massive Attack

Tuesday’s Top 5 Music Obsessions came about late last night, or early this morning. My insomnia has kicked into overdrive since the breakup, so I spend a lot of time awake when everyone else seems to be sleeping. I was obsessively listening to music, trying to write, but mostly just losing myself in songs and feeling so many things. Today’s five came out of that sleepless music binge.

Top 5 Music Obsessions – May 29, 2018

1. “Angel” by Massive Attack

Massive Attack Angel Top 5 Music Obsessions Song 1

“To love you, love you, love you…”

Song 1 is from Massive Attack. “Angel” is the opening track off of Mezzanine. I binged the entire album at around 2am, three times through. This song fit with the scene I was working on, so I kept repeating it, over and over. It’s cinematic. I kept closing my eyes to see the scene play out. I kept getting lost in James’ (the character) mindset as he spiraled around in loss.

2. “Funeral” by Band of Horses

Band of Horses Funeral Top 5 Music Obsessions Song 2

“Really too late to call,
so we wait for morning,
to wake you.
That’s all we got.”

I have so many memories attached to “Funeral”. Some are bittersweet. Some are beautiful. Right now, listening to it over and over is soothing, almost hypnotizing. It feels like a sonic escape.

3. “Inside of Love” by Nada Surf

Nada Surf Inside of Love Top 5 Music Obsessions Song 3

“I know the last page so well.
I can’t read the first.
So, just don’t start.
It’s getting worse.”

That open heart, love big side of me. I think she’s gone. I’m caution’s girl now, wrapped up in pain and loss, and a big wall made of iron. I don’t think I’ll ever let anyone in like that again. We were the last. “Inside of Love” seems a song for another time now, or a hopeful one for a different girl.

4. “You Tore Me Down” by Flamin’ Groovies

“Everybody knows that you’ve been untrue.
You’ve gone and broke my heart,
and made me blue.”

What I suspect I can’t say out loud. So, just play sad bastard 60’s and 70’s music and think “yeah, I get it,”, like “You Tore Me Down”.

5. “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” by The Beatles

The Beatles While My Guitar Gently Weeps Top 5 Music Obsessions Song 5

“I look at the world and I notice it’s turning,
while my guitar gently weeps.
With every mistake we must surely be learning,
still my guitar gently weeps.”

Thank you, George Harrison.
