Belly Top 5 Music Obsessions Lyriquediscorde

Top 5 Music Obsessions featuring Belly

Today has been a bit easier than I expected, in some regard. I’ve made it to 1:15pm without crying. I have been busy and productive, and have been trying with all that I am to ignore that its Wednesday. It will hit later, but for now, I’m ignoring the day. Wednesdays were ours. For a year and a half, they were hours. We’d countdown to them. We’d celebrate them. We made them all memorable. But, we aren’t anymore and I have to find a new way to deal with Wednesdays. Now the tears have arrived. Oh well. I made it half the day, at least.

Today’s Top 5 Music Obsessions is made up of songs that came up on shuffle today while I drove to work. I was trying to stay away from the sad songs I’ve been swimming around in lately. I needed something that would keep me moving forward. Too much to do today. And today. The day of the week I’m trying to ignore. I just need to get to the other side of it.

It will get easier. I know it will. But right now its so fucking hard.

1. “King” by Belly

“I’m your faith.
I’m your faith-healer.
I’m your faithless companion.”

Belly is one of my favorites from the 90’s. Tanya Donelly is “king”. With this song turned up loud, driving down the Los Angeles freeway, I could almost forget everything that hurts. Almost.

2. “Hanging On the Telephone” by The Nerves

The Nerves Hanging On the Telephone Top 5 Music Obsessions Song 2

“I want to tell you something you’ve known all along.

Don’t leave me hanging on the telephone.”

I’m not sure I’d ever heard this cover until today. It’s got a great punk/early new wave/power pop feel. I’d forgotten that Peter Case was in this band.

3. “Romeo and Juliette” by Lou Reed

Lou Reed Top 5 Music Obsessions Romeo had Juliette Song 3

“A diamond crucifix in his ear is used to help ward off the Fear,

that he has left his soul in someone’s rented car.
Inside his pants,
he hides a mop to clean the mess,
that he has dropped into the life of lithesome Juliette Bell.”

I love Lou’s stories. Such a songwriter he was.

4. “Free” by The Martini’s

The Martinis Free Top 5 Music Obsessions Song 4

“So free for the moment.

Lost somewhere between the earth and the sky.
So free for the moment.
Lost because I wanna be lost.
Don’t try to find me.”

Part of me wants to just disappear. Get in the car and keep driving. Change my name, my address, and hopefully my heart. But you always come along when you run, along with all this pain. I know it would follow me.

5. “Fruity” by Rubblebucket

“I stared at your face too long,

until mine was gone.”

New to me. Maybe new to you, too. What do you think?

My Top 5

Thanks for the music Belly, The Nerves, Lou Reed, The Martini’s, and Rubblebucket – and thanks for being part of Today’s Top 5 Music Obsessions.
