Courtney Barnett Top 5 Music Obsessions

Top 5 Music Obsessions featuring Courtney Barnett

A day late, but I didn’t want Tuesday’s Top 5 missed. I’d had them compiled, and had Obsessively been listening to them all Tuesday. Alas, a heavy workload and deadlines took time away and I never got to get to these Top 5 Music Obsessions. But, I’m here now with yesterday’s 5. Today’s will be coming up next, as well. So, its a bonus Wednesday, I suppose. A double-dose of Top 5 Obsessions.

If you feel like Obsessing along with me you can follow along each week by following Top 5 Music Obsessions of the Week on Spotify (updated daily, and restarted each week), or you can listen on YouTube on each Week’s Playlist.

1. “City Looks Pretty” by Courtney Barnett

Courtney Barnett City Looks Pretty Top 5 Music Obsessions Song 1

The first Track from Tuesday’s Top 5 Music Obsessions is “City Looks Pretty” by Courtney Barnett. I keep getting more and more obsessed with Courtney’s Music. The more I hear the more I love. Every Song is so damn catchy, and her storytelling is stellar, often unexpected, and so real. I want to read a book of Courtney short stories. I really do.

“City Looks Pretty” is another pre-Album Single. I can’t wait for the whole Album, Tell Me How You Really Feel, which comes out this month – May 18 from Mom + Pop Music and Milk Records.

2. “Better With Age” by Night Owls

Night Owls Better With Age Top 5 Music Obsessions Song 2

Next up is a new discovery of mine. Night Owls, a three-piece from Leeds who’ve been described as “Grunge Pop”, whatever that is. To me, the Song feels more Britpop with a slightly harder edge.“Better With Age” is another Pre-Album Single. Night Owls has an EP coming out this month called Tragically Human.

Night Owls have said this Song to be about Social Media-Obsession, a topic that is often on my mind lately. They describe it as:

Better With Age is a commentary on this generation’s obsession with social media and how people portray their lives through rose-tinted filters online. It’s written from the perspective of someone who’s become addicted to social media and how it’s become addictive.”

3. “Under the Moon” by Rebecca Lou

Rebecca Lou Under the Moon Top 5 Music Obsessions Song 3

How about another new discovery? I’ve been digging in deep to find new Music lately. Sometimes it’s necessary. I’m a believer that there is always good Music out there to be found, and the hunt is so much fun. It makes me miss working at a Record Store so much.

Rebecca Lou is from Denmark, where she’s gained quite a following. Fans especially love her Loud and Riot-fueled live shows. She reminds me a bit of the Grrrl bands I loved in the 90’s, cross-pollinated with some 70’s/80’s Rock Women I love, too.

“Under the Moon” is her newest Single. Its inspired by her teenage poetry that she self-proclaims as “old emo heartaches” Don’t we all have those from our adolescence? Even if we didn’t call them “Emo” then. Rebecca is definitely one to keep your eyes, and ears out for.

4. “In the Streets” by Rich Girls

Rich Girls In the Street Top 5 Music Obsessions Song 4

I’ve been in a Goth Music mood lately, reliving some of my late 80’s Favorites and waxing nostalgic. At the same time, I’ve been in my New Music discovery mood. So, along come Rich Girls and I’m immediately reminded of Siouxsie Sioux. Looking further into the Band I see comparisons to Hope Sandoval and Iggy Pop, as well. Um…how could I resist those three comparisons?

I couldn’t find “In the Street” anywhere except Spotify, so it will only be on the Spotify Playlist. Hit Play and tell me what you think? Personally, I’m Obsessed with this Song.

5. “I Wanna Destroy You” by The Soft Boys

The Soft Boys I Wanna Destroy You Top 5 Music Obsessions Song 5

And now for something not so new. I’d almost forgotten about The Soft Boys, featuring the Vocals of Robyn Hitchcock. I used to love this Band and Hitchcock’s Music. I stumbled across this Song and had to play it about 5 or 6 times in a row.

“I Wanna Destroy You” needs to be Turned Up Loud. So, go now go and Turn It Up!

So, what did you think about the day late, Tuesday on a Wednesday Top 5 Music Obsessions? Worth the wait? I do hope you enjoy the Songs by Courtney Barnett, Night Owls, Rebecca Lou, Rich Girls, and The Soft Boys as much as I am.
