Top 5 Music Obsessions featuring The Decemberists

Welcome to Tuesday. We made it to the next day after Monday. We made it to the first day of Spring. I spent most of the first half of my day at the department of motor vehicles, waiting. Lots and lots of waiting. I had to renew my driver’s license which involved a thumbprint, a vision test, and a new picture. Four and a half hours wait for those three things. On the plus side, I got some reading done and got to work the rest of my day from home which means cat cuddles, yoga pants, endless coffee, and Music turned up louder.

My birthday is nearing. Friday I will enter into my “last 40”. I’ve never been bothered about age, and I’m still not, but when I think of it that way – my “last 40” – it does feel strange and surreal. Inside I don’t feel all that different than I did at 19, or 29, or 39. Does anyone ever feel any different?

Different, or not, the one thing that always remains is my obsessive love of Music. Today’s Top 5 Music Obsessions starts off with a Song off of the new Album by The Decemberists called “I’m Your Girl”. I’m so obsessed with this Track, the last on the Album and the Title Track. This is my Favorite Album, so far, in 2018. I love it so much.

Track 2 is a Flashback New Wave gem from one of my Favorite New Wave bands, Altered Images, a band from the 80’s that I feel is underrated. “Don’t Talk To Me About Love” immediately reminds me of dancing at a late 80’s underground club called Hot Lava, as well as driving around Hollywood and Santa Monica in my first car, the little red Honda hatchback.

Next up is a Song by St. Vincent called “Los Ageless” off of one of my Favorite Albums from 2017, Masseducation. This is the Album that made me a fan of St. Vincent. Before it I’d not connected with her Music, despite hearing so much raving from friends and fellow Music Obsessives. I get it now though, and I’ve been enjoying going back through her catalog and discovering/rediscovering her Music with fresh ears.

Song 4 is “Dear Life”, Track 4 from Beck’s 2017 Album, Colors. I stumbled upon this Song today and I was into it immediately, hitting repeat multiple times. I think I need to give a good listen to this Album, one I seemed to have missed last year.

Last, but not least, is a Song I’ve been obsessing since the start of this year. “Creature Comfort” from Arcade Fire gives me chills, makes me tear up, makes me sing-a-long so loud, and makes me want to create and emote and feel SO MANY THINGS.

  1. I’m loving the new Decemberists album and I’m not buying everyone saying it’s so different. There’s synths on a few songs sure but it’s still Meloy and company, through and through.
