Monday, Monday, here we are again. You look pretty good today and I’m feeling pretty good meeting up with you even if the time change has me feeling a bit off-kilter. This is the “time” I prefer, where we have longer nights and longer light, but it does take a bit of time to get used to. I wish it just stayed this way always. But, I made it up and out with just a wee bit of a delay, stopped for coffee and to pick-up a salad for lunch, listened to an audiobook on my commute to work (The Immortalists by Chloe Benjamin), and spun Brian Fallon’s new Album, Sleepwalkers most of the morning. In-between though are 5 Songs that I’ve been obsessing over. I love it when the Top 5 Music Obsessions of the Day sound great together, too, it makes the obsession grow even more.
Song 1 is “Preludes” by Craig Finn. Craig is best known as the frontman of The Hold Steady, a Favorite Lyriquediscorde Band. He’s been described as “a born storyteller who’s chosen rock as his medium (from Pitchfork). Like Fallon, who I was listening too earlier, Finn is a stellar storyteller. I’m such a huge sucker for Singer-songwriters who sing a story well. The writer in me connects deeply and applauds it, which is part of why I love The Hold Steady so much. I’ve been digging into Finn’s Solo Album, We All Want the Same Things, released last year, and this Song has been repeated many times over the last week, or so.
Next up is a Brand New Track from The Decemberists. I’m loving this New Song so much. Lyrically, it reminds me of The Cure “Pictures of You”/Disintegration-era meets The Smiths’ “Please, Please, Please Let Me Get What I Want”, the latter Lyrically, and the former sonically (especially the guitars and synth). This is full of 80’s sensibilities, the kind of the Music I loved and listened to, full of synth-pop goodness. I would never have expected it, but it works. I know, without a doubt, that I’m going to be obsessing over this Song for a long while to come. I love it.
“Be More Kind” by Frank Turner is Track 3. Oh Frank, you always just pull things out of me when you Sing. Broken parts, emotional parts, hopeful parts, they are shaken, stirred, and grabbed hold of when I listen to his Music. This Song is no exception the rule. The Title Track to his upcoming 2018 Album (said to be released in May), I’m now even more excited to hear the full Record. This Song is full of nostalgia and looking back, it feels full of getting older, maybe wiser, and perhaps a little bit kinder. This is a beautiful Song, simple, lovely, full of vulnerability and honesty.
How about some Clash for a Monday? “Should I Stay or Should I Go” is one of my Favorite Clash-Tracks, one that is full of many different memories. The one that comes to mind first in my head today is from when I was 19 or 20, working at a Record Store, and hanging out with a coworker who’d become a friend. She had part of this Song as her answering machine message. The Lyrics “This indecision’s bugging me; If you don’t want me, set me free; Exactly whom I’m supposed to be; Don’t you know which clothes even fit me?” were what played when I called her. I thought it was so cool.
The last Track of Today’s Top 5 Music Obsessions is a New Discovery “discovered” through Spotify. This Song reminds me some of Jane’s Addiction, some of The Replacements, and some of Jesus and Mary Chain. I’ll definitely be listening to more of this.
