Mondays seem to be an oddly calming day for me lately. I don’t know what it is. I know I’m a sucker for first days and fresh starts, and that Mondays can signify that. Is it just that? Or does it have something to do with structure and routine? As part of my anxiety disorder (for lack of a better title to give it, either that or my little inner beastie) I tend to need order to things. It isn’t OCD, at least not an all-encompassing form, because I seem to only need it when it comes to work, study, and daily “to-do” things. Work and writing are the places I do it the most, and most of the time the element of order and routine is comforting. It can hinder me, as well, especially on days when chaos and multi-tasking are the norms. But most weeks I can maintain a predictable order to things, and it does keep me breathing better, and feeling more okay in my skin. So, is that why Monday feels this way? Is it the return to routine? Hello, structure, my old friend? It could be.

One thing I do know is that I enjoy putting these together. The Top 5 Music Obsessions of the Day. I start sorting and compiling as soon as I wake up in the morning, often starting with a Song stuck in my head and go from there. It’s a routine, too. The very best kind. The Music kind.

So here’s to Mondays. To routines. To breathing better. And to Today’s Top 5 Music Obsessions. Song 1 is “Someone’s Calling” by Modern English. Too often people only know Modern English from their Alternative/”First Wave” 80’s Hit, “I Melt With You”. They have a lot more Music worth checking out. This Track is from the same Album as their “Melting” Hit, 1982’s After the Snow.

Next up is Emiliana Torrini’s “To Be Free”. I “borrowed” this one from my lovely friend Kristen who has it as Track 1 of a Playlist she shared via Vero today called “as it burned to the end”.

The third Song is from Iggy Pop. I ventured on listening to the Album Brick By Brick after I finished Today’s Song of the Day feature on “Candy” by Iggy and The B-52’s Kate Pierson. There are some fantastic Songs on this 1990 Album, including this one – “Moonlight Lady”.

One of my forever Favorite Sinead O’Connor Songs is Today’s #4. “The Emperor’s New Clothes” is fantastic to me, and feels so much a part of who I was in my early twenties, especially the Lyric “How could I possibly know what I want when I was only twenty-one?” That is just exactly what 21 felt like to me, and if I’m honest, for years afterward, too.

I was 21 when I bought the Album I Do Not Want What I Haven’t Got, and this Song resonated so strongly with me. I would turn it up High and Scream-Sing-a-Long to it, feeling the sentiments from the core of who I was at the time. “The Emperor’s New Clothes” always brings back 1990, and myself at 21, in big, bright, unforgiving color.

Last, but not least is “Devil With the Green Eyes” by Matthew Sweet. Thank you, Spotify Discover Weekly Playlist for introducing me to this Track off of 1993’s Altered Beast Album. This Sweet Album escaped me and my ears. I’m going to have to give it a real big listen soon.
