“Save Me” by Aimee Mann
from the Original Motion Picture Soundtrack for Magnolia (1999)
The music video to “Save Me” was shot during the filming of Magnolia, and it was directed by the film’s director, Paul Thomas Anderson. It uses many of the film’s actors, including Julianne Moore, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Tom Cruise, William H. Macy, and John C. Reilly.
The video inserts Mann into various scenes from the film as she performs the song. Unlike many such music videos, the “Save Me” video used no digital manipulation; the scenes were shot at the end of filming days with Mann and actors who were asked to stay in place. (from Wikipedia)
While Paul Thomas Anderson was writing the script to Magnolia he has said he was listening to Aimee Mann’s first two Solo Albums, along with some unfinished demos for the upcoming Album she was working on (Lost In Space). Anderson had met Aimee in ’96 when she had given him some rough mixes of Songs. He found a similarity between how they wrote characters, in Song, and in the screenplay.
Subsequently, Anderson asked Aimee to write some Songs specifically for Magnolia and sent her a copy of the script. “Save Me” became one of the Songs she wrote for the Movie.
Although the Song definitely reminds me of the Movie, which is one of my Favorites, it also reminds me of a very specific time in my life, and place, where things were emotionally chaotic, vulnerable, and full of mistakes I would not realize I was making until much later.
It also reminds me of my propensity to try to “save” people that clashes with a part of me that is always hoping love will save me. Neither works. No one can save anyone else unless it is a physical save, like pushing someone out of the way of a bus or administering CPR. And love, it can do a lot of things, both good and bad, but it can’t save anyone. Not really. I keep trying to do both though. I think I always will.
