“Open Your Heart” was the fourth Single released from True Blue, Madonna’s third Studio Album. Sire Records released the Single in November of 1986. The Song was a huge hit and has appeared on two of Madonna’s compilation Albums, The Immaculate Collection and Celebration. (Wikipedia)

True Blue was the Madonna Album that really got me loving her Music. Though I had her first two Albums in my collection and liked them, it was True Blue that hit me hard and made me a Fan. I played it non-stop, sang the lyrics into hairbrush microphones and into a cassette player, taking turns with one of my best friend’s, singing our own versions. She and I copied her haircut and adopted red lipstick as a standard (one I still follow).

My Favorite Songs varied, though “Open Your Heart” was often high on my list. Though I’d go on to fall hard for other later Madonna Albums, I still return to True Blue, and this Song, when I’m in a Madonna-Music-Mood.

Originally “Open Your Heart” was called “Follow Your Heart”, and it was more of a Rock Song versus a Pop one. The Song was written for Cyndi Lauper, by Gardner Cole and Peter Rafelson. Madonna ended up taking it for her True Blue Album. She took it on and worked with Patrick Leonard to re-work it into the Dance-Pop Song that we all know, and love.

Cyndi wasn’t the only one to miss out on the Song. The Temptations had an interest in it, too, but when they heard that Madonna was recording it, they withdrew interest.

The 12″ Version is my favorite. I love the addition of Madonna’s spoken word saying:

“Well, are you gonna go out with me or not? What’s the matter, you scared of me or something?”

The child actor Felix Howard (seen below), who is befriended by Madonna’s exotic dancer in the video, later became a successful songwriter. Among the artists, he has songwriting credits for are: Amy Winehouse, James Blunt, and Sugababes.

“Open Your Heart” was the opening song on Madonna’s Who’s That Girl tour in 1987. She also performed the song on her 1990 Blonde Ambition tour. I went to the Who’s That Girl tour, at the Anaheim/Angels Stadium with said best friend. We stood up and sang at the top of our lungs to this Song and all the others. I would see Madonna play again with my friend a few years ago, but nothing was as memorable as that first time, with the Who’s That Girl tour.
