I am still in shock over the sudden death of rock-n-roll, singer-songwriter extraordinaire Tom Petty. He was one of those voices that were always there for as long as I can remember. In the late 70’s I remember his songs on the car radio, in the 80’s they were on MTV, and in the 90’s they were making their way into mix tapes and CD’s I made. Once the 2000’s came along Tom’s music, whether with the Heartbreakers, the Traveling Wilbury’s, or any of the duets or other collaborations he was a part with, or just on his own, his songs were a part of me. That said, I think I took him a little for granted, or maybe a lot.

Was it because his voice and songs were always there? Maybe. He was such a commonality to my ears that it wasn’t until recently, in the midst of my 8-Track Tape obsession, that I started to really pay attention and listen to his music, and to really hear the songs.

I never did get to see Tom Petty live. His last shows were here in my backyard, so to speak, and I missed them. I think I took for granted that there would always be a chance.

As many people are doing now, I find myself digging deep into his catalog of music and letting it take me in. Just like with every other emotion I have, music helps me feel, it helps me mourn, and it helps me to learn.

Don’t take anything for granted – not even music.
