Song of the Day

“To be completely honest,
I think I know how it ends.
The universe continues expanding,
while we discuss particulars of just being friends.”

“To Be Completely Honest” is the 6th Track on Dawes’ 4th studio album, All Your Favorite Bands. I heard the song for the first time on the day of the album’s release. I was on my way to see the band play live at the Masonic Lodge in the Hollywood Forever Cemetary, and I was streaming the new album in preparation. It was one of my first listen favorites. When I heard it live the song became my absolute favorite.

This may be one of the most “honest” breakup songs I’ve ever heard. It is filled with the roller coaster of emotions that happen when in the midst of, and after, the ending of a relationship. The quote above especially hits deep because really, how many of us haven’t been there. Whether you are the one being left, or you are the one leaving, the idea of negotiating being friends after, one of those things that “looks good on paper”, but is so hard to make a reality.

Taylor Goldsmith wrote the song, along with most of the tracks on All Your Favorite Bands. He is one of my favorite current singer-songwriters. It was the lyrics of Dawes’ songs that first attracted me to their music – most notably “Time Spent in Los Angeles” and “A Little Bit of Everything”. Listening to their albums, and seeing them live, sealed the deal for me and I became a forever fan.
