Bank holiday Monday here in the States which means that my morning has started out slower. Second cup of coffee, natural light streaming through the windows, the rain hangover still in the trees, and on the pavement, and I’m here listening to music, picking 5 out for today’s Top 5 Music Obsessions. Today’s Top 5 is as eclectic as most Monday 5’s are, but may be a bit breezier, easier, and reflective of not having to rush out into rush hour traffic and long to-do lists.
Song 1 is a track from Elbow’s iconic album, The Seldom Seen Kid. “Starlings” is one of my favorite songs from the album, and today, this morning, it seemed like the perfect way to start off the Top 5 Music Obsessions. I mean, I have played it 4 times already. Next up is an unexpected cover song that I was reminded of yesterday. My wonderful, music obsessed boyfriend and I were talking about Japan’s cover of “I Second That Emotion” and I’ve been wanting to hear it ever since. I remember spinning it on my vinyl copy of Japan’s Assemblage back in the mid-80’s. It still holds up. Listen to Mick Karns bass in it? Wow. Spotify’s Weekly Discovery Playlist for me had the song I picked for # 3. I love the ironic lyrics in “(Nothing But) Flowers” by Talking Heads. It’s like the flipside of Joni Mitchell’s “Big Yellow Taxi”. Jimmy Cliff’s quintessential hit song, “I Can See Clearly Now” is next. This is the song I woke up with in my head. It fits the morning, without a doubt. Today’s Top 5 ends with “Lonely In Your Nightmare” by Duran Duran, one of my forever and ever favorite songs. Turn this one up to LOUD. You won’t regret it.

Top 5 Music Obsessions of the Day – 9/4/17
1. “Starlings” by Elbow
“I sat you down and told you how,
the truest love that’s ever found is for oneself.
You pulled apart my theory,
with a weary and disinterested sigh.”
2. “I Second That Emotion” by Japan
“Maybe you’ll wanna give me kisses sweet,
but only for one night,
with no repeat.
And maybe you’ll go away,
and never call, darling.
And a taste of honey is worse than none at all.”
3. “(Nothing But) Flowers” by Talking Heads
“There was a shopping mall,
now it’s all covered with flowers
You’ve got it,
you’ve got it
If this is paradise,
I wish I had a lawnmower.”
4. “I Can See Clearly Now” by Jimmy Cliff
“I think I can make it now,
the pain is gone.
All of the bad feelings have disappeared.”
5. “Lonely In Your Nightmare” by Duran Duran
“There’s heat beneath your Winter,
let me in.”
