Thursday’s Top 5 Music Obsessions of the Day are a 5-song moody mix of favorite artists of mine. These are the 5 songs that I played, on repeat, on my way into work this morning, and they are the 5 songs I keep playing as the day starts to unfold. It all started with Jeff Buckley and thinking about Tiffanie DeBartolo’s book, God-Shaped Hole. Driving through parts of Los Angeles this morning I was reminded so strongly of Trixie and Grace. I half expected to see them walking hand-in-hand into a diner, or with bags full of fresh fruit from a corner market.
The rest of the songs just fell into place, and into my obsessive 5-songs-on-repeat morning commute.
Song 1 is “Last Goodbye” by Jeff Buckley. It is the first Jeff song I ever heard. I can still remember seeing the video play on MTV as part of their Buzz series. The ads for it ran often during airings of the short-lived TV series, My So-Called Life, that ran over a summer on MTV. The next track is one of my favorite songs off of Ryan Adams recent album, Prisoner. “Do You Still Love Me?” has a late seventies rock vibe that I completely dig. Aimee Mann’s song, “Goodbye Caroline”, is song 3, off of the often overlooked concept album, The Forgotten Arm. It is such a great album! Neko Case’s exceptional cover of “Danny’s Song” is up next. I fell hard for this song when I heard it on the HBO Series Vinyl last year, and the love for this cover is still going strong. The last song is PJ Harvey’s emotional punch of a song, “C’mon Billy”. How can you not be obsessed with that song?
