Let’s hear it for Wednesday and Today’s Top 5 Music Obsessions of the Day. Today’s Wednesday Edition has a Theme to it – Summer in Songs. Now, this could be a full 30 Song Playlist or more, but for Today it is just 5 of the Best “Summer in Songs” Songs. We hope you Turn all 5 Up Loud and Sing and Dance-a-Long. That’s what we are doing – RIGHT NOW!
Song 1 is “Summer” from Buffalo Tom, a Band that will forever and always remind me of the (too) short-lived TV Series, My So-Called Life. Ben Gibbard and Death Cab For Cutie is up next with their “Summer in Songs” Song, “Summer Skin”. A few Summers ago I could not get enough of this Song, and now it’s back again – for more. Track 3 is Soul Asylum’s “Summer Of Drugs”, a Song I first heard on the Epic 90’s Compilation Album, Sweet Relief. Lyriquediscorde Favorite, Pete Yorn has Track 4, with the Song “Summer was a Day”. Lastly, July Talk’s “Summer Dress” leaves us with a Delicious Indie Rock explosion that you will definitely want to Turn Up the Volume on and probably hit REPEAT a few times (at least).
We hope this Mix of Summer 5 gets you in that Summer Mood, and that it has you Turning Up the Volume and maybe even Singing-A-Long. 1. “Summer” by Buffalo Tom
“Summer’s gone,
a summer song.
You’ve wasted every day,
every day.”
Mid-90’s Power Pop/Alt-Rock with a side of Grunge Sound that brings me right back to a Summer spent at a Record Store job, trips to the Beach, the Balboa Ferry, the return of a start-stop-start-stop relationship, a very young daughter, and endless pages of composition books filled with writings. And this Band, as mentioned above, is forever synonymous with My So-Called Life, the show, and all the people I met because of the show. All of us who were a part of it probably feel the same way when they hear Buffalo Tom.
2. “Summer Skin” by Death Cab For Cutie
“I don’t recall a single care,
just greenery,
and humid air.
Then Labor Day,
came and went,
and we shed what was left of our summer skin.”
Ben Gibbard and Death Cab For Cutie are geniuses at storytelling via Song, especially stories about relationships – the start, the middle, and the end. This Song seems to tell a love story through the seasons, a love story that came and went in those seasons, as well.
This is no “Summer Lovin'” Song (i.e. Grease), that’s for certain.
3. “Summer of Drugs” from Soul Asylum
“But I’d started off my teenage years,
with a poison in my mouth.”
I’ve always loved the Lyric quoted above. Although it is in reference to a story of a brother saving his sister by sucking a snake’s poison out of her, there is something MUCH more to the Lyric to me. Something about coming of age being a “little death” of sorts, and also, the poison being the doorway to other poisons (drugs, drink, and even love).
4. “Summer was a Day” by Pete Yorn
“I couldn’t be the one to warm your heart.”
End of Summer Love maybe? Or perhaps it is a different coming-of-age, and coming to some kind of realization. Going back home, or to reality, and looking back at the days of Summer, the escape, perhaps a fantasy.
These are the things I think of today when Listening to this Song.
5. “Summer Dress” by July Talk
“Yeah, but this is life we’re living.
Life ain’t always ’bout forgiving.
She’s my lady in a summer dress.”
