Here’s a little preview. Song 1 is from Belle And Sebastian (feature image), “The Stars of Track and Field”, one of the first Songs I ever heard from the band. Next up is a Favorite from Doves, “Caught by the River”. Ride is up next with a Track from their latest Album, Weather Diaries. We are digging “Cali” right now – it is definitely one of the Best Songs on the Album. Primal Scream is Song 4, with “Damaged”, from their Quintessential Album, Screamadelica. We end Today’s 5 with a Beach Boys Cover. “God Only Knows” by Claudine Longet (pictured below) is Blissfully Beautiful, don’t you think?

TOP 5 MUSIC OBSESSIONS OF THE DAY:
1. “The Stars of Track and Field” by Belle And Sebastian
“Have you and her been taking pictures of your obsessions?”
A Lyric about Obsessions for the First Song of Today’s Top 5 Music Obsessions. Seems appropriate, don’t you think? This one goes out to a friend and fellow Music Obsessor on his Birthday. Happiest of Birthdays from Lyriquediscorde.
2. “Caught by the River” by Doves
“Life.
You know it can’t be so easy.
But you can’t just leave it,
cause you’re not in control no more.“
Such a Breathtaking and Cinematic Song (no wonder they’ve used it in 3 Television Shows – The OC, Scrubs and Case Study). This one needs to be repeated more than a few times to let all the Hope (whether intended or not – it feels Hopeful to me) and Beauty and Sound wash over you. Music is so amazing.
3. “Cali” by Ride
“Saw you,
kissed you on the beach,
and I was saved.”
Have you Listened to the new Ride Album? Weather Diaries? If not, you really should. Songs about California (and Los Angeles) are Favorite around here, and this is a New One added to the ever-growing Collection.
4. “Damaged” by Primal Scream
“Sweet summer days,
when I was feeling so fine.
Just you and me girl –
was a beautiful time.”
Screamadelica is such a Brilliant Album, a definite Essential for any Music Collection. This Song is one of the many reasons.
5. “God Only Knows” by Claudine Longet
“God only knows what I’d be without you.”
Unexpected Covers are a Favorite here. This one is definitely unexpected, and simply Gorgeous.
I recently caught Claudine in the Film The Party (1968), with Peter Sellers. What a nice surprise to come across this Cover by her.
Said of the Original Song:
The song names “God” in its title and lyrics, unusual for a pop single of its time, as Asher recalled:
“Unless you were Kate Smith and you were singing ‘God Bless America’, no one [in 1966] thought you could say ‘God’ in a song.” The sentiments expressed in its lyric were not specific to any God, and could be addressed to any higher force, being a song about moving forward after loss. Wilson explained that his and Asher’s intention was to create the feeling of “being blind but in being blind, you can see more”.
We hope you enjoy this Wednesday’s Edition of the Top 5 Music Obsessions of the Day, and that you Press Play and Turn Up these Tunes from Belle And Sebastian, Doves, Ride, Primal Scream and Claudine Longet – and Enjoy!
