The Slits’ Cover of “I Heard it Through the Grapevine” is up next, reminding us how great an unexpected Cover Song can be. Pink Floyd’s Song “Brain Damage” is up next, taken from their Quintessential Album, The Dark Side of the Moon. The Buggles come in at Song 4 with the Track whose Music Video started it all at MTV. Do you remember seeing it air for the first time? Our Last Track today is New Order’s (pictured below) “Krafty”, which is a Song we’ve been obsessing over for years – one we’re sure has made its way into the Top 5 Music Obsessions list a time or two before.

TOP 5 MUSIC OBSESSIONS OF THE DAY:
1. Baby’s On Fire by Brian Eno
“Baby’s on fire,
and all the laughing boys are bitching.
Waiting for photos,
oh, the plot is so bewitching.”
Featuring one hell of a guitar solo from Robert Fripp. This Song navigates through musical style effortlessly, reminding me of Dark Wave, Electro Synth, Hard Rock, Art Rock, and something entirely unclassifiable.
The Song is said to be about a bizarre fantasy about a photography session involving a burning infant and unthinking, laughing onlookers. To me, it always reminds me of the Movie “Blow Up” (1966).
2. “I Heard It Through the Grapevine” by The Slits
“It took me by surprise I must say
when I found out yesterday.”
An unexpected Cover Version of a Song originally written by Norman Whitfield and Barrett Strong, for Motown Records, in 1966. We love unexpected/surprising Covers here at Lyriquediscorde, and try to feature them when we can.
One of the coolest things about this Cover? When they change the Lyric in one line to “I heard it through the BASS LINE.”
3. “Brain Damage” by Pink Floyd
“And, if the dam breaks open many years too soon.
And if there is no room upon the hill.
And if your head explodes with dark forebodings, too.
I’ll see you on the dark side of the moon.”
We’ve been on a Pink Floyd kick lately, especially the Albums Meddle and The Dark Side of the Moon – both on 8-Track. This Song is a standout every time we play Dark Side.
“Brain Damage” is the 9th Track from the 1973 released Album. It was sung by Roger Waters. It was originally called “Lunatic”. It is often played back-to-back with Eclipse.
4. “Video Killed the Radio Star” by The Buggles
“Pictures came and broke your heart.”
Though the Song will always be connected to the History of Music Videos, and of MTV itself, it is the movie “Take This Waltz” that now comes to mind when I hear it, as it was featured in a pivotal scene, one that has stuck with me ever since watching the Film.
Taken from “Take This Waltz”
5. “Krafty” by New Order
“You’ve got to look at life the way it oughta be.
Looking at the stars from underneath the tree.
There’s a world inside,
and a world out there.”
This Song just feels “Monday-ish”, don’t you think? Turn this one WAY UP, and then Press Play and Listen again.
We hope you enjoy this Monday’s Edition of the Top 5 Music Obsessions of the Day, and that you Press Play and Turn Up these Tunes from Brian Eno, The Slits, Pink Floyd, The Buggles, and New Order – and Enjoy!
