Tuesday’s Top 5 Music Obsessions of the Day is a meet-up of New and Current Alternative Music and Retro New Wave and Post-Punk Songs. What they all have in common is Energy, the kind that makes you want to move around, get things done, and dance, dance, dance. Song 1 is a New Song from Imagine Dragons’ (featured image) Album Evolve which flies right into AWOLNATION’S “Jump On My Shoulders”, one of our Favorite Tracks from their Quintessential Album, Megalithic Symphony Deluxe. Tom Tom Club comes in at # 3 with “You Make Me Rock and Roll”, a Deep Cut from the Album, Downtown Rockers. Depeche Mode is next with “Dreaming Of Me”, which seems to slip so perfectly into Song 5, The Human League (pictured below) with “Together In Electric Dreams”.

1. “Thunder” by Imagine Dragons
“Not a yes sir,
not a follower.

I was lightning before the thunder.”
Such a powerful lyric – “I was lightning before the thunder“. Imagine Dragons new Album Evolve turns up the Energy and Electronics from their first 2 Albums, adding some Dance influence into their Edgy Alternative sound. We’re digging it here at Lyriquediscorde.
2. “Jump On My Shoulders” by AWOLNATION
“I say we rob from the rich,
and blow down the door.
On to the next,
to dance with the poor.
Jump on my shoulders,
you can jump on my shoulders.”
Though not their Big Hit, this has always been a Lyriquediscorde pick for the Best from the Album Megalithic Symphony Deluxe. Love the Robin Hood feel to the Lyrics and the addictive Beat. This is an immediate, feel-good Song.
3. “You Make Me Rock and Roll” by Tom Tom Club
“In my heart I see your beauty!
In my mind I see your soul!”
Digging deep into the more recent Tom Tom Club Ep (Downtown Rockers from 2012) reminds us that this was not just a rehash of the CBGB Post-Punk New Wave that gave us “Genius of Love”, but it is just as cutting edge and interesting. This is the Song that is standing out today, but the whole EP definitely deserves further exploration.
4. “Dreaming of Me” by Depeche Mode
“All the night.
Fused tomorrow.
Dancing with a distant friend.”
So many memories attached to this Song, and so much dancing associated. This one definitely needs to be Turned Way Up.
5. “Together in Electric Dreams” by The Human League
“We’ll always be together,
however far it seems.
We’ll always be together,
together in electric dreams.”
Even if we didn’t know the movie this Song is from, we would know it is from a film. It has that “end of the movie” feel to it, lyrically and musically, don’t you think?
The Song was written by Philip Oakey and Giorgio Moroder, and the Movie itself (Electric Dreams) was directed by Steve Barron, who had previously directed the Music Video for The Human League’s Biggest Hit, “Don’t You Want Me”.
