TOP 5 MUSIC OBSESSIONS OF THE DAY :: 6/30/17
Welcome to Friday’s Edition of Top 5 Music Obsessions of the Day brought to you buy the Music Addicts and Obsessers here at Lyriquediscorde, where we gather up 5 Songs a Day that we can’t get enough of and share them with you. Friday is “Female Friday” around here, so Today’s Top 5 will be all Women in Music. Are you ready to Turn Up the Volume and give this Friday’s Top 5 a spin?
Song 1 is from Tanya Donelly. Her Song “Pretty Deep”, from 1997’s Lovesongs for Underdogs is the perfect way to start off this Female Friday Music Obsessed Top 5. Next Up is Throwing Muses with Kristin Hersh, with “Snakeface” from 1995’s University. Bettie Serveert’s Song “Ray Ray Rain” is Track 3, which leads perfectly into Juliana Hatfield Three’s Hit, “Spin the Bottle”. Jill Sobule ends Friday’s Female Edition of Top 5 Music Obsessions of the Day with her Song, “I Kissed a Girl”. What a Cool 90’s Female Friday Top 5, don’t you think?

TOP 5 MUSIC OBSESSIONS OF THE DAY:
1. “Pretty Deep” :: Tanya Donelly
in this time,
brings a girl down.”
The First Single (Released August of 1997) from Tanya Donelly’s Debut Solo Album, Lovesongs for Underdogs, “Pretty Deep” is a great example of Tanya’s Storytelling. This Song paints such a Vivid picture, giving pieces of a story without fully unpacking it, teasing the Listener just enough to imagine, and want, more.
2. “Snakeface” :: Throwing Muses
“Not another drive-in movie.
You know you can’t sit still.”
Throwing Muses, a Band that Tanya (see above) was once in, is a Favorite here at Lyriquediscorde. “Snakeface” is off of University, a Throwing Muses Album without Tanya. Kristen’s Voice in this one is both Hypnotic and Melodic, making this one a definite stand-out on the Album.
3. “Ray Ray Rain” :: Bettie Serveert
“‘Cause both our minds are occupied by memories.”
Such a Great Lyric – “’cause both our minds are occupied by memories”. Bettie Serveert is a Band that I’m always surprised did not become bigger. They are such a 90’s memory-trigger to me, especially this Song.
4. “Spin the Bottle” :: The Juliana Hatfield Three
“He’s in a bunch of movies,
really stupid movies.
It’s not entirely his fault,
he can’t control it all.”
From a Favorite Movie at Lyriquediscorde, by a Favorite Singer, Juliana Hatfield – a definite WIN/WIN on this Female Friday Top 5 Mix.
Have you ever played spin the bottle?
5. “I Kissed a Girl” :: Jill Sobule
“So we laughed.
We had a drink.
We had a smoke.
She took off her overcoat.”
Another underrated Woman in Music for Female Friday. Jill is a phenomenal Songwriter, and so good Live – if you have the chance to see her play, you definitely should!
We hope you enjoy this Female Friday Edition of the Top 5 Music Obsessions of the Day, and that you Press Play and Turn Up these Tunes from Tanya Donelly, Throwing Muses, Bettie Serveert, The Juliana Hatfield Three, and Jill Sobule – and Enjoy!
