Wednesday’s Top Music Obsessions of the Day has a Melodically Mellow feel to it, easing us into the mid-week with 5 Soothing Sonically Stunning Songs. There is a bit of that just waking from a dream feel to every Track, each carefully curated for your Daily Listening Pleasure. Are you ready to Turn Up the Volume and Take in Today’s Top 5?

Song 1 is an unexpected Radiohead Cover done Beautifully by Gillian Welch. Next up is Angus & Julia Stone with an unexpected Song Title for this time of year – “Snow” (it works though, you’ll see). Track 3 is an Arctic Monkeys Deep Cut that is Sexy and Addictive, and should have been a Single. This leads into The Weakerthans, with a Melancholic Song that feels like walking alone in a city in the middle of the night, or very early morning, trying to shake someone from your heart – “Left and Leaving”. Richard Ashcroft ties it all together with one of his Best Solo Songs, “You On My Mind In My Sleep”.

Gillian Welch, Top 5, Top 5 Music Obsessions

1. “Black Star” :: Gillian Welch

“The troubled words of a troubled mind,
I try to understand what is eating you.
I try to stay awake,
but its 58 hours since that I last slept with you.
What are we coming to?
I just don’t know anymore.”

This rendition of Radiohead’s Song hits deeper and with so much more emotion because of the way the Lyrics are delivered. The sadness was always there, but more distant, lost somewhere in the back of the Sounds. But, Gillian’s version is vulnerable, stripped down, and so heartbreaking. Both are Amazing, different, and necessary to hear, but this Version definitely cuts through to the core.

2. “Snow” :: Angus & Julia Stone

“Any chance that I could have something to drink?
Any chance that I could have something to drink?
Walking around here looking for something,
I can get fucked up on absolutely anything.”

New Song from Angus & Julia Stone. The juxtaposition between the Beautiful Sound and the Raw Lyrics about getting messed up is very much the dynamic that Angus & Julia put forward in their Music. It works, and sinks in, taking a few Listens to really get what they are Singing about (and what you finds yourself Singing-A-Long to).

3. “505” :: Arctic Monkeys

“I probably still adore you,
with your hands around my neck,
or I did last time I checked.”

My Favorite Arctic Monkeys Song (tied sometimes with “Mardy Bum”). I’m still surprised this was never Released as a Single.

4. “Left and Leaving” :: The Weakerthans

“My city’s still breathing,
but barely,
it’s true.
Through buildings gone missing like teeth.
The sidewalks are watching me think about you,
sparkled with broken glass.”

These Lyrics slay. So beautifully heart-wrenching, vivid, complete. It reads like Poetry.

5. “You On My Mind In My Sleep” :: Richard Ashcroft

“If all we lose is the skin,
I’m putting you under within,
we’re gonna make this life together.”

A Favorite Love Song of mine. I woke with this Song in my mind (post dreams).
