Let’s head back to the mid-Seventies with this Edition of 8-Track Throwback Thursday. The year was 1975, and Suzi Quatro Released her 3rd Studio Album, Your Mama Won’t Like Me, in May of that year. The Album has been said to mark a change in the Hard Rock Sound from Suzi’s previous Releases, Suzi Quatro and Quatro, instead displaying a more Funk Oriented Rock Sound.

SUZI QUATRO’S YOUR MAMA WON’T LIKE ME ON 8-TRACK:

For me, Suzi Quatro was first Leather Tuscadero from Happy Days to me. The sister of Fonzi’s girlfriend Pinky, a bass player and singer in a band. I was enamored with her, and soon grabbed hold of her Albums, including this one.

At the time it was on Vinyl, so it was not until recently that I discovered Your Mama Won’t Like Me on 8-Track Tape.

Suzi Quatro, born Susan Kay Quatro, was born June 3, 1950 (almost happy birthday to you, Suzi). She grew up to become a Rock Singer-Songwriter, Multi-Instrumentalist, and sometimes actress. Suzi was the first female Bass Player to become a Major Rock Star, breaking a barrier to women’s participation in Rock Music.

THE TRACK LISTS ARE AS FOLLOWS:

  • Track 1 = “I Bit Off More Than I Could Chew”, “Can’t Trust Love”, and “New Day Woman (part 1)”
  • Track 2 = “New Day Woman (part 2)”, “Fever, and “Michael”
  • Track 3 = “Stop Me”, “Paralyzed”, and “You Can Make Me Want You”
  • Track 4 = “Prisoner of Your Imagination” and “Your Mama Won’t Like Me”

The first thing I noticed, before even looking at the Track Listings, is that the Album Title is slightly different than the Vinyl Album Release, which was titled Your Mamma Won’t Like Me. I’m not sure why the spelling of Mamma/Mama is different – perhaps Tape Cover Space?

Also, as with the other 8-Tracks we’ve featured here, the Track List is in different order. I do wonder why this seems to be such a common occurance. The only thing that comes to mind is space on each “Track”, and perhaps a striving for as few Songs that have to be split between Tracks as possible.

I’m reminded some of the challenge of making Mix Tapes (on cassette) “back in the day”, and how you never wanted a Song to cut off at the end of a Side.

Both start with “I Bit Off More Than I Could Chew”, but other Versions have “Strip Me” next, where the 8-Track Tape has “Can’t Trust Love” as Track 2. The rest of the Album is different, too, with no other similarities.

To be honest, with this Album I do not have a preference to order. Perhaps it is due to the fact that I spent more time listening to Suzi’s other Album, Self-Titled, than this one.

As ever, the 8-Track Sound is Stellar. As mentioned in previous posts, on a list of what formats I prefer Hearing an Album off of, 8-Track is in 2nd place, after Vinyl – but they are becoming very close in order, almost tied for the Top. There is a warmth to 8-Tracks that you do not find on Cassette, and that definitely is missing in the more precise, yet sterile, CD and Digital file.

Favorite Song on the 8-Track? Its honestly a tie between the Title Track “Your Mama Won’t Like Me” and the Funk Rock Track “Strip Me”.
