Song 1 is Track 1 off of the Debut, and Quintessential Album from DEVO (pictured below), Freedom of Choice. Next up is Thomas Dolby’s Tune about “Europa and the Pirate Twins”, my Favorite Song off of his 1982 Album, The Golden Age of Wireless. Song 3 is one of Primal Scream’s Biggest Hits, off of their Phenomenal Album, Screamadelica. “Movin’ On Up” will have you up and moving, for certain. Blur’s Song “She’s So High” is up next, another Favorite Britpop Tune that with Primal Scream’s Song, back-to-back, should have us all itching for tomorrow’s Britpop Tuesday post. T. Rex (Marc Bolan, pictured below) reigns this Top 5 Music Obsession Playlist in with the Deep Cut Favorite from Electric Warrior. “Life’s a Gas” seems like the Perfect ending in this Sing-A-Long Monday Top 5. What do you think?

TOP 5 MUSIC OBSESSIONS OF THE DAY:
1. “Girl U Want” :: DEVO
“Swings from somewhere you can’t see.
She sits in the top of the greenest tree.
She sends out an aroma of undefined love.
Drifts on down in a mist from above.“
A high energy Love Song meets Dance Song meets Punk meets New Wave with huge 50’s/60’s Pop sensibilities. This is one of those Songs that it is near impossible not to Sing-A-Long to. Are you Singing-A-Long, too?
2. “Europa & The Pirate Twins” :: Thomas Dolby
“Down the beaches,
Twelfth of Never,
on the sand.”
A different kind of Love Song. The kind that is heavy with nostalgia, and long-lost childhood friends. I always Loved the nod to Peter Pan and Neverland in the above Lyrics. Do you have a friend from long ago that you think of still?
3. “Movin’ On UP” :: Primal Scream
“I was lost,
now I’m found.
I believe in you,
I got no bounds.
I was lost,
now I’m found.
I believe in you,
I got no bounds.”
Another Love Song, moreso even than the two above. There is a Spirituality at play here, too, and it could be interpreted in a vein of religion and spiritual belief, but I’ve always seen it more of an Ode to a Love between two people. Maybe that is the romantic in me.
4. “She’s So High” :: Blur
“She’s so high.
I want to crawl all over her.“
Lust or Love? Loss of Love? Is this about a person, or a drug? There seems to be so many ways to read this Song. What do you Hear it as?
5. “Life’s a Gas” :: T. Rex
“I could have loved you girl,
like a planet,
I could have chained your heart to a star.
But, it really doesn’t matter at all.
No it really doesn’t matter at all.
Life’s a gas.”
I woke with this Marc Bolan/T. Rex Song in my head, and the whole Top 5 kind of grew from it – even if I put the Songs in the opposite order, ending with this one, even if it began the 5 Songs.
Bring it on, Monday, we are armed with 5 Great Songs to help us ready ourselves for Today, and the rest of the New Week. We hope that Today’s Top 5 Music Obsessions filled a portion of your Monday with Musical Delight, that you Pressed Play, Turned Up the Volume, and Sang-A-Long to Today’s Great Music Choices.
