Friday’s Top 5 Music Obsessions of the Day is teetering on a precipice of a Goth Theme, featuring some of the Best Songs that are either from the Goth Genre, or About the Goth Scene itself. This Top 5 List was spawned from a Track off of the newly Released Album from The Mountain Goats (pictured below) titled Goths. Sometimes part of the fun of the Daily Top 5 is seeing where the Music goes, what one Song brings to the next (or how it inspires the next), and how the end result, either that Day’s 5, or the entire Week’s Playlist, Plays out.

Song 1, as mentioned above, is taken off The Mountain Goats New Album, Goth, which is a Themed Album all about the Goth Scene. Next up is Tom Petty’s Story about a famous Los Angeles Goth Club from the 80’s called Zombie Zoo, the same name as the Song. Track 3 in the Top 5 is one of my Favorite Siouxsie And The Banshees’ Songs, from their Quintessential late 80’s Album, Peepshow. Siouxsie leads seamlessly into Peter Murphy’s “Cuts You Up”, an all-time Favorite Song of mine. Friday’s Top 5 winds itself down with a Gorgeous Song from Love And Rockets (pictured below), “If There’s a Heaven Above”, which feels like the Perfect Ending for this “Sorta Gothy” Top 5.

The Mountain Goats, Top 5, Top 5 Music Obsessions

Top 5 Music Obsessions of the Day:

1. “Rain in Soho” :: The Mountain Goats

There’s a club where you’d like to go,
you could meet someone who’s lost like you.
Revel in the darkness like a pair of open graves,
fumble through the fog for a season or two.

This is an Epic Sounding Song, Chill-Inducing really, and the more I Listen to it the more I hear the complexities in it. The chanting of the background Singers sounds so “Goth/Deathrock”, like an early Sisters of Mercy track. The Lyrics dig deep, going in further than just a surface fashion statement, or Music style. I’m looking forward to Listening (and Reviewing) the entire Album.

2. “Zombie Zoo” :: Tom Petty

All down the street they’re standin’ in line,
with white lipstick and one thing on their minds.
Hey little freak with the lunch pail purse,
underneath the paint you’re just a little girl.”

This Song is more satirical in nature, written from an outside perspective. Though I recognize a lot of it, the lines outside the club, the lunch pail purse, there is a lot here that is overly stereotypical and misses the inner dynamics that went on back then. But, that is my perspective from a girl who once stood in those lines with her own lunch box purse. A girl who knew there was so much more going on in that scene, and with those people.

3. “The Killing Jar” :: Siouxsie And The Banshees

Needles & sins,
sins & needles,
he’s gasping for air in the wishing well.

One of my Favorite Siouxsie Songs from this era. I vividly remember dancing to this song on Wednesday and Friday nights, “back in the day”.

4. “Cuts You Up” :: Peter Murphy

I find you in the morning,
after dreams of distant signs.
You pour yourself over me,
like the sun,
through the blinds.

One of my All-Time Favorite Songs. It is such a Gorgeous Song, and the Lyrics, they are stunning. “You pour yourself over me, like the sun, through the blinds” has always been one of the Best Lyrical Lines, to me.

5. “If There’s a Heaven Above” :: Love And Rockets

If there’s a heaven above,
in the meantime.
If there’s a heaven above,
let it be near.

I woke up with this Song in my head. This Song, and the entire Seventh Dream of Teenage Heaven, is so Beautifully Stunning.
