TOP 5 MUSIC OBSESSIONS OF THE DAY:
1. “Money Changes Everything” :: Cyndi Lauper
I’m sorry baby,
I’m leaving you tonight.
I found someone new,
he’s waitin’ in the car outside.
how could you do it?
We swore each other everlasting love.
well yeah I know,
but when we did.
There was one thing we weren’t really thinking of,
and that’s money.”
There is something so 80’s about this Song, not just the Sound, but the Lyrics especially. That said, there is also something so timeless about it. It still feels relevant. This is one of those Songs that I often throw on to a break up/getting over it Mix.
2. “Silver Lining” :: Rilo Kiley
“And, I was your silver lining,
as the story goes.
I was your silver lining,
but now I’m gold.”
Another break up/get over it Song. This one has such a Seventies Singer-Songwriter feel to it, I can almost picture it playing out of my transistor AM Radio back in 1976, when I was seven years old.
3. “Boyfriend” :: Best Coast
“One day I’ll make him mine,
and we’ll be together all the time.
We’ll sit and watch the sun rise,
and gaze into each others eyes.”
I Love the Summertime feeling of this Song, the Throwback to 60’s Girl Groups Vibe, that Teenage wistful wishing for a Boy you have crush on, how timeless it is, and even how ageless it feels (you don’t have to be an adolescent to crush hard on someone).
4. “There is a Light that Never Goes Out” :: Dum Dum Girls
“Take me out tonight,
where there’s music and there’s people,
who are young and alive.“
I Adore this Cover of The Smiths Quintessential Song. I Love the different feel the Dum Dum Girls give to it, their spin on it, a bit more lilting, and somewhat more hopeful. This is another Song on this Top 5 list that feels like Summertime to me. I don’t know, maybe I’m just itching for Summer.
5. “Everyday is Like Sunday” :: Morrissey
“Hide on the promenade,
etch a postcard:
‘How I Dearly Wish I Was Not Here‘.”
I wonder what the Dum Dum Girls Version of this Song would be like?
I remember – vividly – the first few times I Spun this Song, and how the above Lyric hit me so deeply. That time in my life, how the sentiment of “how I dearly wish I was not here” hit home.
Here’s to Sing-A-Long Wednesday’s Best Songs of the Day from Today’s Top 5 Music Obsessions of the Day. We hope you Pressed Play, Turned Up the Volume, and Sang-A-Long to Today’s Music Choices float over you.
