Top 5 Music Obsessions of the Day:
1. “Lost Coasstlines” :: Okkervil River
“Leaving behind all the faces that I might replace
if I tried on
that long ride.
Looking deep inside.
But I don’t want to look so deep inside yet.”
I love the Banjo at the start of the Song. I love the Harmonies, and the back-and-forth Vocals from Verse to Chorus. Lyrically this Song is both thought-provoking and beautiful. I feel like it is about letting go, leaving, going, and seeking something new. There is hesitation in the changing, trepidation of the unknown, but there is still the movement of going on regardless. At least that is what I Feel in this Song.
2. “Thinking of a Place” :: The War On Drugs
“I remember walking against the darkness of the beach.
Love is like a ghost in the distance,
Travel through the night because there is no fear.
but right behind,
until I watched you disappear.”
This Song starts out slowly, almost Ambient in style, and then a Soft Seventies Rock/Singer-Songwriter Sensibility takes over. When the Vocals start in I feel transported. I feel as if I’m floating inside the Song. It is a wonderful feeling. This is one of those Songs that I want to drive through the desert listening to, in the early morning, right as the sun begins to rise.
3. “My Wrecking Ball” :: Ryan Adams
“Nothing much left in the tank,
somehow this thing still drives.
You forgot what it needed,
but somehow still survives.“
Without realizing, these Songs today all seem to fit into a Desert Road Trip kind of feeling. Or at least some kind of driving Soundtrack. This Song hits hard every single time I Listen to it. I think we’ve all had a “Wrecking Ball” in our lives. We have probably all been one ourselves, to someone.
4. “Please, Please, Please Let Me Get What I Want” :: The Dream Academy
“So, please please please,
let me, let me, let me,
let me get what I want,
Such a Beautiful Song. So Melancholic, Desperate in some ways, but Hopeful in others. It reminds me of being an adolescent, wanting so many things, hoping, yet wary from the disappointments in life that are part of growing-up.
5. “Challengers” :: The New Pornographers
“‘Be safe’, you say.
Whatever the mess you are you’re mine, okay.“
This was the first Song I ever heard from The New Pornographers. I Loved it immediately. I still do. I believe it is my all-time Favorite Song of theirs.
