Thursday’s Top 5 Music Obsessions of the Day compile the Best Songs Today to fill up some of the spaces that Friday Eve possesses, helping us all to get through the drag and pull of this almost-the-weekend day. This time around the Top 5 is full of Britpop and British Singer-Songwriters, ending with some Welsh Jangle Pop. This is a Strong Sonic Set that definitely benefits from Turning that Volume Up High. Also, these Songs, they all come off of Stellar Albums that really deserve their own spins. Check them out if you have the time – you won’t regret it.
Song 1 is from a Britpop Band that was a newer discovery of mine over the last two years. The Longpigs deserve a place in Britpop History, and have become a band that is in the Top 10 Britpop 90’s Best. Next up is The Verve, with the first Song I heard this morning, “So It Goes”. Paul Weller is Song 3 with “So It Goes”, off of the Album Saturns Pattern. With the Tour Dates in my backyard being Released this week, and the Sampler of his upcoming Album showing up today, I had to extend the Weller Wednesday vibe with One More Song. Oasis is up next with “Shakermaker”, off of their Quintessential Album, Definitely Maybe, a Song that really, really needs that Loud Volume adjustment. The Top 5 comes to a close (for Today anyway) with Some Jangly Pop Goodness from The Sweetest Ache, with the Song “Tell Me How It Feels”, a new Band and Song discovery of mine.
So, there you have it. Why don’t you settle in, get comfortable, and let the Top 5 Music Obsessions of the Day take over for a spell. Oh, and don’t worry, if you miss a day you can always catch up through the links above. Each days Songs are Added to the Spotify and YouTube Playlists (see the links above) for the Week, for your Listening, and Music Obsessing Pleasure.
TOP 5 MUSIC OBSESSIONS OF THE DAY:
1. “Lost Myself” :: The Longpigs
“She sold herself on the one love.
The one that most of us live without.
And dressed for the occasion day after day.
Forgives herself when it don’t come.”
My Favorite Longpigs Song. It is Melancholic, Britpop Goodness that Swirls and Soars, and builds up to a Stunner of a Rock Song, too. I do believe the Longpigs are underrated, at least here in the States. They definitely deserve some deeper Listens, if you are so inclined.
2. “So It Goes” :: The Verve
“Life.
Roll my die.
Change this life.
You said this movie was mine,
but now you go and change your mind.”
I Love when you happen upon a Song from an Artist or Band you Love that you may have never paid much attention to before. Today it was this Song from The Verve, off of their Album, A Northern Soul. I’m really Digging this Song today.
3. “Long Time” :: Paul Weller
“For such a Long Time,
I couldn’t find myself.
For such a Long Time,
thought I was somebody else.”
One of my Favorite Tracks off of Weller’s Album, Saturns Pattern. I was Blasting this one on the freeway this morning. It fit the early sun and all the Los Angeles traffic, and all my excitement for the upcoming Tour (and being able to see Weller for the 1st time).
4. “Shakermaker” :: Oasis
“I’d like to be somebody else,
and not know where I’ve been.”
I think this Song fits perfectly after the Weller one above. The one thing that really sticks out to me is that each Song reflects, to me, a different time in a person’s life. I feel like Weller is writing (and singing) from a person with some years behind him, whereas this Oasis Song is coming from the perspective of a much younger, newer to life, adult.
5. “Tell Me How It Feels” :: The Sweetest Ache
“Can’t you accept the way I am?
I know one day we’ll pull through.
It’s not the way I want to be.
Please don’t give in ’cause that’s just me.”
This Dreamy, Jangly Pop Tune is one of my New Discoveries of the week that I’m Musically Obsessing over. Maybe you will, too. I hear a Belle And Sebastian vibe here.
