Top 5 Music Obsessions of the Day :: 5/5/17

The Top 5 Music Obsessions of the Day for the 1st Friday of May gifts us 5 of the Best Songs of the Day from a variety of Amazing Artists and Albums. Today’s Mix of 5 starts out a little bit Indie, then breezes into the Alternative Singer-Songwriter vein, and from there we take a deep, deep dive into the 70’s and 80’s New Wave, Punk and Mod Scene. Are you ready for Friday’s Top 5 Musical Goodness?

We go from 78 Saab (pictured below), a new-to-me discovery, to one of my Favorite Singer-Songwriter Bands, The National. Track 3 is a Big Hit from Television, “Marquee Moon”, both the Song and the Album, is truly some of the late 70’s New Wave/Punk Music out there. The Jam brings us the Story of “Liza Radley”, one of my Favorite Songs of theirs, off of the Sound Affects Album. I Love a good Story told in Song, don’t you? Last, but certainly not least, is one of the Best Songs from The B-52’s (pictured below). How can you not Love, and Turn Up Loudly, “Quiche Lorraine”?

Settle in and get comfortable, and let the Top 5 Music Obsessions of the Day flow all around. And don’t worry, if you miss a day you can always catch up through the links above. Each days Songs are Added to the Spotify and YouTube Playlists (see the links above) for the Week, for your Listening, and Music Obsessing Pleasure.

78 Saab, Top 5, Top 5 Music Obsessions

Top 5 Music Obsessions of the Day:

1. “Sunshine” :: 78 Saab

Sun in the eyes isn’t easy.
Making your way home.”

I love the late 90’s/early 2000’s feel to this Song. I stumbled on it while looking for a certain Sound to add to a Playlist I was making, and was immediately intrigued. I don’t think I’ve heard 78 Saab before, though there is something about this Song that seems vaguely familiar. It reminds me of some of the Music from the TV Series The OC, which always had great Music playing on their Show – lots of Indie and Alternative Songs like this one.

2. “Baby We’ll Be Fine” :: The National

I wake up without warning,
and go flying around the house,
in my sauvignon fierce,
freaking out.
Take a forty-five minute shower,
and kiss the mirror,
and say,
look at me –
baby, we’ll be fine.”

I Love Matt Berninger’s Voice, and I Love the Storytelling that goes on in all The National’s Songs. This one, it sketches out the day-to-day life of an individual that could be anyone, or could be everyone, in such a Poetic way. Sometimes this Song makes my heart hurt. Sometimes it just makes me shake my head and also say, yes, “baby, we’ll be fine”.

3. “Marquee Moon” :: Television

I was listening,
listening to the rain.
I was hearing,
hearing something else.”

Written by Tom Verlaine, this Song is full of so many Styles and Sounds to me. I can hear New Wave here, the early 80’s kind (think The Plimsouls, Sparks, The Stranglers). I hear Punk in here. I even hear some Jam band and Grunge sensibilities here, as well. Television inspired a lot of Sound and Style that came after them. And the guitar work, oh my stars, just listen to that guitar.

4. “Liza Radley” :: The Jam

Liza Radley,
see the girl with long hair,
see her creeping ‘cross summer lawns at midnight.
And all the people in the town where we live say she’s not quite right.
She don’t fit in with a small town.
They just can’t understand why she’s doesn’t stay in hospital,
in a darkened room,
it’s for their lives only she cries.
Liza Radley,
see her jump through loneliness.
Liza Radley,
take me when you go.”

One of my Favorite Songs from The Jam. The Storytelling here, just another reason why I Love Paul Weller, his Songwriting is Amazing to me. I can see Liza so clearly, can feel her, and always end up wanting more of her Story. When you listen I bet you can see her, too.

5. “Quiche Lorraine” :: The B52’s

Everyday I take her out,
She runs around and she shouts out and barks,
‘Cause she’s a good doggie.
She’s a sweet, sweet, sweet puppy.
And I know she’ll stick by me,

A Punk and New Wave Masterpiece that makes you want to Dance and Sing-a-Long, all about a puppy named Quiche La Poodle. It could only be The B-52’s.
