Top 5 Music Obsessions of the Day:
1. “Los Angeles” :: Phosphorescent
“They told me my eyes would never be clearer.
To hold on to mine,
make good money out here.
They told me those lies,
just grinning from ear-to-ear.
They showed me a lie.
They said, ‘here is our offer, ain’t it fine?‘”
The darker side of Los Angeles is Story Sung in this Ode to Los Angeles. It reminds me some of Elliot Smith’s Song “Angeles”, with its dark and jaded tones, and the pervasive feeling of despondency, the giving up it seems to convey.
2. “Heartbreak Beat” :: The Psychedelic Furs
“There’s a heartbreak beat,
playing all night long,
down on my street.
And it feels like love,
got the radio on.
And it’s all that we need.”
Throwback Thursday time, and this is one of my Favorite Tracks from one of my Favorite bands from my adolescence. Love and the Radio, Love and Music, seems like the perfect pairing.
This Song always reminds me of John Hughes’ films, though I don’t think this particular Song ever played in any of them.
3. “Playground Love” :: Air, featuring Gordon Tracks
“I’m a high school lover,
and you’re my favorite flavor.
Love is all,
all my soul.
You’re my playground love.”
This Song was definitely part of a Movie Soundtrack. Sofia Coppola’s Films always have such Stellar Soundtracks, and The Virgin Suicides is no exception. This is such a Gorgeous Song, too, inside and outside the Film.
4. “Lighthouse” :: Patrick Watson
“Dreaming of a lighthouse in the woods,
shining a little light to bring us back home.”
I stumbled on this Song yesterday and felt immediately drawn to it. Listening closer, I find it both beautiful and strange that the lighthouse in this Song is in a forest, and not by the ocean.
It reminds me of a book I’m reading right now – Tell the Wolves I’m Home by Carol Rifka Brunt, and of the character June, who spends so much time in the woods. I can see her picturing a lighthouse somewhere in the midst of all the trees.
5. “Cloud on My Tongue” :: Tori Amos
“You’re already in there.
I’ll be wearing your tatoo.
You’re already in there.”
I’ve always Loved that Lyric. Its always reminded me of Love.
