Top 5 Music Obsessions of the Day :: 5/3/17
The Best Songs of the Day for the First Wednesday of May start slow and melodically in the BritPop vein, and stay in the 90’s briefly until it all switches to 3 Stellar Singer-Songwriters for Today’s Top 5 Music Obsessions of the Day. Are you ready for it? Do you have your headphones ready? Or your car stereo? No matter what your Music Player Pleasure, it’s time to Turn Up the Volume and Listen to Today’s Top 5.
Song 1 is one of the Best Blur Songs, “Tender”, from their Quintessential Album, 13. Next up is a Big Hit from Eels, “Novocaine For the Soul”, also one of my All-Time Favorites. Neko Case switches our ears over to the Singer-Songwriter vein with a Song so worth obsessing over, “Hold On, Hold On”. My Absolute Favorite Jason Isbell Track is up next. “Cover Me Up” was one of my Most Played Songs in 2016, and I’m sure while you Listen you’ll be able to see why. “Shiver and Shake”, off of Ryan Adams’ latest Album, Prisoner, brings Today’s Top 5 to a close, and what a Gorgeous way to end.

Top 5 Music Obsessions of the Day:
1. “Tender” :: Blur
get through it.
Come on, c
love’s the greatest thing.“
Isn’t it though?
“Tender’s” lyrics were written by Damon Albarn and Graham Coxon and the Vocals are shared on the track with the London Community Gospel Choir, as the Song’s Backing Vocals. The line “Tender is the night”, and by extension the name of the song, is a reference to the novel Tender Is the Night by F. Scott Fitzgerald, whose title was in turn a quotation from Keats’ Ode to a Nightingale.
2. “Novocaine for the Soul” :: Eels
“Before I sputter out.”
The start of this Big Hit from Eels is a treasure hunt of Music Sampling, featuring variously identified Songs from Captain Kings and the Monkeytimers’ “Straightaway”, Fats Domino’s “Let the Four Winds Blow,” and a track called “She Knows” from a 1964 Beatles knock-off album by The Schoolboys.
Do you hear them?
3. “Hold On, Hold On” :: Neko Case
“Now it’s the devil I love.
And, that’s as funny as real love.”
I included this Song in Monday’s Playlist, and it hit a Top 5 List back in April, as well. I can’t seem to get enough of this Song. There is a sense of having one’s beliefs shaken up in this Song. A coming-of-age, in a way, when the way you think and feel, and the things you believe in, including love, begin to shift.
Or maybe that’s just how I hear it.
4. “Cover Me Up” :: Jason Isbell
“So cover me up,
and know you’re enough,
to use me for good.”
One of my Favorite Love Songs for that Lyric above alone. As Blur said above, “love’s the greatest thing”.
Oh my stars, this Song is so Beautiful. It always gives me chills.
5. “Shiver and Shake” :: Ryan Adams
“If I wait here any longer,
I’ll just fade away.”
My current Favorite Track off of Ryan’s latest Album, Prisoner.
