The Best Friday Music comes our way with today’s installment of Top 5 Music Obsessions of the Day. Friday’s Top Listens are all a bit on the Goth and Darkwave side of things, deliciously dramatic and dark, brooding and beautiful, the kind of Songs you will want to Turn Up Loud and Sway to.
Black eyeliner not required.
Song 1 is “Like an Animal” from The Glove. I vividly remember buying their Album, Blue Sunshine, on cassette, while visiting San Francisco, in the late 80’s. Next up is my Favorite Joy Division Song, the Quintessential “Atmosphere”. Nine Inch Nails’ Joy Division Cover is up next, bringing in Number 3 with their take on “Dead Souls”. Love And Rockets are next with is a Song most definitely in my Top 5 category of “Best Love And Rockets” Tunes. Depeche Mode’s Ode to Love, “Somebody”, ends this Friday’s Top 5, which seemed like the Perfect place to end up at. It is such a Beauty of a Song.
Click to listen to each video below, or choose the Spotify or YouTube link to listen to the Top 5 Song Obsessions of the Day :: Top Five playlist. I add each five songs shared to both playlists each day, so they expand as the Month unfolds. Each Month will have its own ever-expanding Playlist, so if you missed a day, or a past week, it’s all there for your audio perusal.
Top 5 Music Obsessions of the Day:
1. “Like an Animal” :: The Glove
“Two people dance on the edge,
three of us push them away.
There’s nowhere to go,
we’re all in this,
but nothing can hurt us at all.”
The first copy I had of this was on a Cassette. Bought from a record store in Berkeley on the same trip I got the wall size Siouxsie And The Banshees poster that hung in the bedroom of my first apartment. Every trip to the Bay Area always resulted in new Music, and Music related items. Books, too.
2. “Atmosphere” :: Joy Division
“Endless talking.
Life rebuilding.
Don’t walk away.”
My Favorite Joy Division Song. Always. It gives me chills. It is so Beautiful and so full of emotion, heavy, sad, and yet somehow I always heard a tiny twinge of hope in it, too. It really is a Gorgeous Song. Throw on some Headphones and Turn Up the Volume and Hear for yourself.
3. “Dead Souls” :: Nine Inch Nails
“Someone take these dreams away,
that point me to another day.
A dual personality.
A strange but true reality.“
How Great is the Soundtrack to the Movie The Crow? I Obsessed over it for months and months after I saw the Film. This one was always one of my Favorites, though I have to admit that for awhile I did not realize it was a Joy Division Cover, not until a few years later when I heard the Original on a Mix of Joy Division Songs a friend made me.
4. “Haunted When the Minutes Drag” :: Love And Rockets
“Haunted by your soul.
Haunted by your hair.
Haunted by your clothes.
Haunted by your eyes.
By your soul,
by your hair,
by your clothes,
by your eyes,
by your voice,
by your smile,
by your mouth,
by your soul
by your hair,
by your clothes,
by your eyes,
by your voice,
by your smile,
by your mouthb
by your soul.
Haunted.“
One of my All-Time Favorite Songs. Talk about Beautiful, this one is one of the most Beautiful. Haunting, Sensual, Beautiful.
5. “Somebody” :: Depeche Mode
“She will listen to me,
when I want to speak,
about the world we live in,
and life in general.
Though my views may be wrong,
they may even be perverted,
she’ll hear me out,
and won’t easily be converted,
to my way of thinking,
in fact she’ll often disagree.
But, at the end of it all,
she will understand me.”
Sigh. As an teenager I listened to this Song endlessly, feeling it, and wishing within it for that kind of “someone”, and to be that kind of “someone” to another. I’d not listened to it much as an adult. Its been one of those Depeche Mode Songs that slipped away from me. But, I heard it yesterday and it struck me that, though it may have taken forty-some years, I did find it.
