Weller Wednesday :: “Brand New Toy”
Welcome back to Weller Wednesday, where we Listen to, Learn about, and Play Loudly the Music of Paul Weller, in all his many Musical evolutions and incarnations. This Week’s Weller Wednesday we are spinning the 2014 Weller Tune “Brand New Toy”. I hear so much Beatles when I Listen to this Song. Let’s Press Play together and see if you Hear it, too.
“And, it was plain to see,
you were meant for me.
I’m like a brand new toy,
that you bought from me.”
“Brand New Toy” from Paul Weller was released in 2014 as a Single. The Single was a precursor to the compilation/”Best of” Album, More Modern Classics, a follow up to 1998 compilation Modern Classics. “Brand New Toy” would be the Last Track on the Album.
“Brand New Toy was released on 2014’s Record Store Day.
Paul Weller’s More Modern Classics Album was released in 3 versions: 1 disc CD compilation, a Vinyl edition and a 3-Disc CD “deluxe” edition.
The Song, “Brand New Toy” has been deemed “catchy”, “poppy” and reminiscent of 90’s Britpop. Though I can hear the Britpop comparison, I hear more of The Beatles’ Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band era sounds and sensibilities. It could be a Sonic companion piece to “A Day in the Life”, or even “When I’m Sixty Four”. All that said, there is a Quintessential Weller Sound here that transcends any of the compares and contrasts.
