My Top 5 Music Obsessions of the Day :: 4/17/17
It’s back again, Monday, the start of a new week, and to get us all through here are the Best Songs for this Monday for you to Press Play to. Today’s My Top 5 Music Obsessions of the Day consist of Retro Trips, Old Favorites and New Discoveries. A bit of something for every mood, and every ear. Are you ready to Turn Up the Volume on Today’s Top Tracks?
The Top 5 start with a dark story-told gem from The Jam. Next up is a classic New Order Song, my Favorite Song of theirs, “Age of Consent”. Third to Sing to us is a Track from the latest Album from The New Pornographers (pictured above), Whiteout Conditions. Song 4 is a “Couch”ella discovery (Coachella live stream) from this past weekend, a local Los Angeles Band that is New to me, Chicano Batman. And last, but certainly not least, is The Clean’s “Anything Could Happen” which round out Today’s Top 5 for Monday, the start of the week.
You can click to listen to each video below, or choose the Spotify or YouTube link to listen to the My Top 5 Song Obsessions of the Day :: Top Five playlist. I add each five songs shared to both playlists each day, so they expand as the Month unfolds. Each Month will have its own ever-expanding Playlist, so if you missed a day, or a past week, its all there for your audio perusal.
My Top Music Obsessions of the Day:
1. “The Butterfly Collector” :: The Jam
“There’s tarts and whores,
but you’re much more,
you’re a different kind,
’cause you want their minds.”
Have you ever heard a Song multiple times, yet never truly listened to the Story that the Lyrics are telling? “The Butterfly Collector” is one of those Songs. Dark and rough, tragic and real, this portrait of an aging groupie cuts sharp and deep. Yet another example of what an articulate and crafted songwriter Paul Weller is.
2. “Age of Consent” :: New Order
“And, I’m not the kind that likes to tell yo,u
just what I want to do.
I’m not the kind that needs to tell you,
just what you,
want me to.“
My Favorite New Order Song. I am so excited to see them Play Live tomorrow night, in Santa Barbara. My first time seeing them Live. Stay tuned for a Live Review later this week.
3. “Clockwise” :: The New Pornographers
“In the valley of the little fingers.
In the valley of the lead singers.
We are not quite done.”
Quickly becoming my Favorite Track off of The New Pornographers’ Newest Album. It has an 80’s vibe to it, and fits in just Perfectly after New Order, don’t you think?
4. “Black Lipstick” :: Chicano Batman
“Her blood was red,
but now it’s blue.
She no longer smiles at you.”
I checked in on Coachella, off-and-on, over the weekend and on Friday. The standout to me was also a Music New Discovery – Chicano Batman. I look forward to diving more into their Music, and hopefully catching a Live Show, or two. They are “local”, after all – and really good.
5. “Anything Could Happen” :: The Clean
“Look for an answer in empty doorways.
Talked to a dancer,
said “It’s out on the highways”.”
The Perfect Tune for the start of the week, and for the eve of a road trip. The lyric above with the highway-sentiment, and the overall narrative of “Anything Could Happen”, just seems written for this week.
