The Best Songs coming your way this Thursday, from My Top 5 Music Obsessions of the Day, are all in the Play Loud category, all 5 of the Songs ready and waiting to wake you up and push you through this final stretch of the week. It’s Friday Eve after all, that “almost there” kind of day, so what better time then now to Turn Up the Volume on some Epic Thursday Tunes.

Let’s start out with an Anthem from Augustines, a Song that is meant to be sung-a-long to, the kind that a live audience joins joyfully in with. Next up is a Bonus Track from Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds (pictured above) Album, Chasing Yesterday. Primal Scream brings us Song 3, with a little help from Melanie Draisey, with their Ode to a cursed Love in a “Beautiful Summer”. Blur comes in next with one of my Favorite Tracks from Modern Life is Rubbish, and then its The Libertines, with “Time for Heroes”, that bring Today’s Top 5 Music Obsessions to a close.

You can click to listen to each video below, or choose the Spotify or YouTube link to listen to the My Top 5 Song Obsessions of the Day :: Top Five playlist. I add each five songs shared to both playlists each day, so they expand as the Month unfolds. Each Month will have its own ever-expanding Playlist, so if you missed a day, or a past week, its all there for your audio perusal.

My Top 5 Music Obsessions of the Day:

 1. “Are We Alive?” :: Augustines

Well, lay me,
lay me down,
“with my fucking clothes off”,
she said.
Well, lay me,
lay me down.
“Honey, we’re alive not dead.”

One of the Best Live Shows I saw last year was the Augustines show I caught at the Bootleg Theater. For weeks after I was still reeling from it, playing their Albums obsessively, even more than I had before. Though there are others that I’d say are my All-Time Favorites, it is This Song that helped me through some huge changes that happened around the end of Last Summer. It was there for me when I was struggling, or feeling weighed down by doubts. It was my go-to, “I can do this”, Anthem.

2. “Freaky Teeth” :: Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds

Well, your momma and your wife,
cut your heart out with a knife,
and they left you for the dogs to lick your bones.
They made you cry the rain,
but they loved you just the same,
before your God,
and the devil,
took your soul.”

I wonder how many Songs there are with “teeth” in them? Probably more than I realize.

3. “Beautiful Summer” :: Primal Scream, featuring Melanie Draisey

Lover is a drug,
love is a demon.
Love is a curse,
sexy as sin.
Oh, lovers are murderers,
who want to steal your soul.
Oh, lovers are murderers,
who want to keep,
who want to kill your soul.

My Favorite version of one of my Favorite Primal Scream Songs. I feel like this Song, and the Noel One above, could be in the same Story, or perhaps book of Short Stories. Speculative fiction dark and doomed Short Love Stories, or tales of morality conflicts and crossroad decisions. Might be an interesting Playlist to make, actually, within that kind of Theme.

4. “For Tomorrow”:: Blur

London ice cracks on a seamless line,
he’s hanging on for dear life.
And, so we hold each other tightly.
And, hold on for tomorrow.”

I’ve had this Song spinning in my head all day. Especially the “La-La-La” parts.

5. “Time for Heroes” :: The Libertines

Did you see the stylish kids in the riot?”

It’s been too long since I spun Up the Bracket, the debut Album from The Libertines. I can still vividly remember the first time I heard it, and those first couple of months of obsessing over the Band, and their Music, that followed. They will always be one of my Favorite Bands.

See what I mean? All those Songs really needed you to Turn Up the Volume, didn’t they? I hope you enjoyed Today’s Top 5 Music Obsessions. See you tomorrow when we Spin an Epic Mix of 5 Songs to celebrate the arrival of Friday, and to ring in the Weekend.
